Look at the power supply board for capacitors that have gotten "puffy" on the top. That indicates a failed part. Shopjimmy.com has repair kids.

This Acer Extensa 2300, when I connect the adapter, powers on automatically without pressing the power button, the fan runs, but the screen remains black, and nothing more. What could be the problem?

This is a POST (Power on self test) issue.
When we say POST, computer components that are affected are: memory, processor, motherboard and power supply.
-For memory issues, try reseating the memory modules or try to swap it with known good ones to isolate the issue.
-Processor is the least component that has probability to fail.
-Motherboard and the power supply are the most common components to fail.
If the system is still under warranty, try contacting the manufacturer for support.

I think it is the power supply. It is a Besttec ATX-200-12Z Rev D mounted in a Compaq 6450NX desktop PC running Windows XP Professional Computer will (intermittenly) start up, and shut down on it's...

Hello,

While it could be the motherboard it does seem more likely that it is the power supply.

Here are two options to test your theory:

1. If you have another known good power supply or can borrow one, hook it up to the motherboard and see what happens.

2: Or, if you have a known good motherboard or can borrow one (does not have to be the same as yours of course) hook your power supply to it and see what happens.

Screen has started to flicker constantly. tv is 9 months old. When switched off flickering stops for about 5-10 minutes and then starts again

I had the same issue occur on my ln55c650 and they had to replace the power supply pc-board. Seems some issue with power module in the TV rather than the side panels. Luckily for me, TV was still in warranty.

sounds like the power supply module is going bad...these are known for having power supply issues...when it get warm it will fail...sometimes restarting it will make it work...you can obtain a new supply for the unit at tigerdirect.com...be sure to get one with the same or higher wattage rating...these run about 25 - 45 dollars.

Computer seems to have died..

Hi

Thank you for your query

Please try the following

1) Change the fuse in the power supply plug
2) Remove all cables and battery from the laptop and then hold down the power button for 20 seconds (thats right there will be no power to the laptop) - this is to destat the laptop
3) Retry
4) If te above fails then the faults are as follows

1)Loose DC jack - this can be tested by plugging your power supply in and wiggling the DC jack if it is loose it will move alot

2) Faulty motherboard/CPU

For both the above i would not recommned you do the repair yourself, but book into a reputable PC shop

If this has been useful please leave postive feedback/vote

Biostar MCP6P M2+ i have to swicht on many times until it starts. power supply seems OK

If you have tested the power supply on another machine (or replaced it recently with a known working one) a common problem for motherboards is that some manufacturers use generic Chinese capacitors in order to lower production costs.

The problem is that these cheap parts have a very short life and often after a year or so of use (sometimes less) the capacitors stop functioning properly which can cause the issue you are describing, in addition to random power downs, or sometimes the motherboards will not start at all.

Your best bet would be to Remove all of your devices except Motherboard/CPU/RAM and verify that the problem still exists with a known working Power supply. If you are still having issues I would just replace the motherboard, replacing all of the capacitors on the motherboard would be very time consuming, in addition to some motherboard have multi-layer boards which are virtually impossible to be serviced by the end user.

E-machine 5220 power up

Emachines have notoriously cheap power supplies. Often, while the power supply itself doesn't fail, it causes the failure of motherboard components, essentially trashing the computer.

Try the following:

First check and make absolutely certain that the power switch connector is properly connected to the motherboard. (Take standard grounding/safety precautions: wear a properly-grounded grounding strap, for example, when working with any internal components.)

Obtain a known-good power supply of equal or greater capacity to your eMachines PS and switch 'em out.

If either of these fixes your problem, well and good. If not, the problem may be, as is all too common with eMachines power issues, a motherboard issue caused by the power supply.
