Question about Computers & Internet

1 Answer

I have a Dell Optiplex GX620 which is plugged into a power strip. Yesterday, I was moving furniture and I accidentally hit the power strip's switch. When I turned the power strip back on, I clicked the power button on my PC and nothing happened, no fan noise, no light, nothing. What is the problem and how do I fix it?

The power strip may be damaged, try a different one.
The mains power outlet may be damaged, try a different mains outlet.

Power comes on no video, monitor works

Try hitting the F8 key or what ever is the key for safe mode, or try F11 for boot menu, if boot menu shows boot to hard drive.

If these don't work, unplug the PC, then hold the power button until the lights flash or hit again and make sure lights don't flash on.

remove the side cover, touch metal, then remove the little round battery for 5mins, replace, plug in, hit power, not hit the delete key and try to boot into the BIOS, you will need to set the date and time. then move to exit and save changes and exit.

My dell optiplex light is solid yellow

That usually means the switch on the power supply has been moved to 220v vs 110v. The switch is located just above where the power cord plugs in.

GX620 power light flashes green and monitors go black. Have to hit power button to wake it up. Is this a hardware issue?

It sounds like a power management issue. Click Start > Run and type control panel. Hit enter and find the power management section. There should be an option to select how long it takes for the system to "sleep." You can disable this option, so the system won't sleep. I've included a brief how-to on the matter.

Dell Optiplex GX620 Desktop PC's south bridge IC heats up abnormally...

Check the capacitors on the motherboard, Dell had a BIG problem with faulty capacitors on the GX270, GX520, GX620, GX745 and GX755 units. The parts would cause the unit to either not boot at all or lockup booting or running programs. I would bet you have some that are just beginning to fail and the motherboard power is not stable which would mean the chips are not getting enough power. Here is a link to an article about the issue and what to look for on your board.
