Question about Computers & Internet

Sonic the Hedgehog CD PC version Windows 7 error. After installing the original gold colored Sonic the Hedgehog CD, and the patch for the program, Sonic CD loads the intro screen, then freezing, and a box pops up saying "MCI driver error". I have looked on the internet, and even called Microsoft, but have had no success in finding the Windows 7 MCI driver to play this game.

I should state that I've been working on computers since before Windows 3.1. I hate to say this but unfortunately both those were unsuccessful, as I have tried both before I posted this. If you try to run the software in compatibility mode either selecting Windows 95 or Windows 98 / ME both in 256 colors and 600 x 800, the error still pops up. If you use VirtualBox with Windows 98SE or ME on it, unfortunately the same error pops up. This is because the software even though fully installed on your computer looks for a file off the CD to run, and your DVD drive is always in Windows 7 mode. This is why you will still get this error

Hi, welcome to FixYa!

Forgive me, but I remembered that Sonic the Hedgehog a rather very old program, which is designed to be running in Windows 9x/ME. I bet that's why it's demanding an MCI driver because it's not compatible with Windows 7.

There are 2 solutions for this.

First choice is you can try to use compatibility mode to run this program. Right-click on the .EXE file of the games (or you can use also right-click on the shortcut on Desktop or Start menu), then go to Compatibility tab, check "Run this program in compatibility mode for", then choose "Windows 98 / Windows ME".

Second choice, you can use VirtualBox, install Windows 98SE or ME on it, and then install the DirectX, remember to install VirtualBox guest addition as well, configure Shared Folder so your Virtual Machine can access to your host OS, then install the game and played it inside your Virtual Machine.

I hope my solutions are working. Thanks for using FixYa!

I have Curse: The eye of Isis, and it dosnt work on my windows 7/ home premium. Is there any patch I can get?

DreamCatcher no longer lists this game at their site: http://www.dreamcatchergames.com/dci/pc.php . So there are no patches available in the support site.

Curse: The Eye of Isis was issued for XP and older versions of Windows. The installers and drivers are totally different with Windows 7. What version of Windows 7 Home Premium do you have? If you have the 32-bit version, the compatibility mode might work. (It is less likely to work with 64-bit Windows 7. However, there are no guarantees for either version.)

To try using the compatibility mode: right click on the installer. Then choose Properties and then the Compatibility tab. Turn on Run program as Compatible with the appropriate OS. Then right click again on the installer and choose Run as Administrator. Make sure the program is running in the compatibility mode if it does install by doing the right click and Properties step again.

A method that will work but will cost more money is to use a computer (virtual, dual-boot, or true second machine) with an older version of Windows installed. If you buy an upgrade to Win7 Pro or Ultimate, you can create a virtual XP computer for free. Download and install Virtual PC and XP mode from Microsoft. Install them in order. Then install the software from your CD in the virtual computer and it will work. (Other virtual computer programs are Parallels and VMWare.) All of the other options will require a licensed version of the older Windows OS.

I hope this helps.

Not compatible or not working well with windows 7?
(make your program/application run with windows 7)

Maybe, It doesn't work because the driver/application you installed is for other versions of operating system. I am also using windows 7 like you so don't you worry, You can still use your old installer/driver from other versions of operating systems. Just remember that before installing any program in a windows 7 Operating System Computer, Use "troubleshoot compatibility". Right Click the Icon of your program installer/application first, then choose "troubleshoot compatibility". This will allow you to choose on what type operating system your program will run. Just reply back if it still doesn't work.:D rate and vote for me:))

Just got Windows 7 and trying to install printmaster gold 17...won't work. what do i do?

Windows 7 has a compatibility wizard that you can use to help install it. Go to start, control panel, and then type in troubleshooter in the search box. Under programs, click "run programs for other versions of windows." Follow those instructions. If you need to browse to the setup file on the disc, do so. If that does not work, you can go to Broderbund's web site. They have a compatibility update for Gold 17 on their website. Unfortunately it is for Vista, but it still might help you with the compatibility issue

Try uninstalling Roxio and the Sonic drives and run Fixit. Then reboot and install Roxio first then the Sonic driver.
If this doesn't work uninstall again as previously, install Roxio and check the CD/DVD if necessary run Fixit then install Sonic driver.
