If the line is only there when using the ADF (Automatic Document Feeder), you need to clean the area of glass just past the point where the paper leaves the feeder and is scanned just before it comes out again. That will be at the left end of the feeder and the glass stage. There will be white-out, dust, a marker ink, etc that is blocking the light from scanning the page at the same spot where you see the line on the copy.

Also, lift the cover on the ADF and blow it out with a can of compressed air.

When using top feed I get a line in the copies

Check the small **** glass in the left side of the printer under the top feed for dirt, ink, whatever. Clean it with windex. That should solve your problem. The "whatever" is right in the path of the scanner, and the scanner is seeing that as permanent spot, which ends up as a line on copies.

It works great in all aspects, but when I make a copy of something there is a black line about 2.5" from right side of paper (only when I use the auto feeder to copy) If I lift the lid and palce the paper...

You need to lift the document feeder and clean the small **** exposure glass located to the left of the main exposure glass.Any foreign substance on this glass(ink, glue, correction fluid, etc.)will cause lines on copies when you use the feeder.

Clean the small piece of glass on the flat bed. Should be on the left side of the flat bed when you lift the doc feeder.

Vertical line on Brothe MFC 8460N

To solve the printing problem..

# Hold the cartridge upside down, with the bar-code label facing you and take a damp paper towel.
# Use the towel to wipe the printhead of the cartridge on the bottom (where the ink comes out). Wipe the printhead horizontally in one direction only (left to right).
# Continue doing this until it looks clean.
# Then dab the cartridge on the towel to make sure the ink is flowing.
# Next, look inside the printer and locate the carrier that holds ink cartridges. Caution: Make sure the cartridges are not installed at this point.

1. Look for a shiny piece of metal underneath the contacts at the back of the carrier.
2. Take a damp cotton swab (use water only!) and wipe along the bottom of the shiny metal piece. Note: You may need more than one swab.

# Reinstall the cartridges, making sure you snap them correctly into the printer.

Have Lexmark X7170 Have black line running on copy on left third only when using auto feed.

IF the line only appears on the autofeed, then the feeder optics have a dirt or some other contaminate on the optical sensor/lens area. A good cleaning inside the autofeed where the optics scan should resolve

Lines through copies

The scan glass is dirty or it has a scratch on it. It can be a small dot of ball point pen ink. A small ball of tape adhesive. A hair....it is not always easy to see. Clean it with a good solvent.
Also if the ADF feeder tray is out of adjustment, it could be caused by the edge of the paper.
