Oh please don't try replacing a spark plug if you don't know how to locate a cylinder position on an engine..........
pin second thoughts, ONE by ONE, replace all the spark plugs. Then you don't need to know exactly where any cylinder in particular is..and you will be doing some preventative maintenance as well, since most people replace gem as a set.......

I can't explain why water in the engine means bad water pump, but... Overheating can certainly be caused by a bad water pump. Water in the cylinders or in the oil after overheating is typically caused by a blown head gasket, and you can't really fix that with a water pump.

I think your mechanic either needs to do more checking, or is trying to get you to do an inexpensive task, so he can discover an expensive one while he has it apart, and you can't take it somewhere else.

From the PCoA (pathfinder club of Australia):
ignition on
as spanner and countdown flashes:
press the odo reset button and hold until new figure flashes
use odo button to set desired figure (1000's)
then wait and its done

its your secondary timing chain guide ... their is tsb about it i done alot of them .. they have up dated version of it .. you will need secondary chain and guide maybe tensioer gudle too you will know it when you take it apart ...

Either your TPS is not working, MAF Sensor, Fuel PUMP is not giving enough Gas, Blockage in the Air Intake System.

I one had a customer with the very same problem, what we found was a PLASTIC BAG that got sucked into the Air Intake system......

was it doing this before you changed them? something is wrong with your firing, recheck firing order. could be a component you swapped in is faulty. if it was doing this before you changed them check crank sensor and lambda sensor
