sounds like the link on the box has poped off have a look under the car at the selector arm if its not moving the shaft its the gear linkage in the car

You thought it was a Phillips Screw

It is a Torx Screw like a T20 size, most likely

You also come across some metric hex at times,
so make sure it looks like a double hex,thus torx

Likely vacuum leak since the air blend doors work off of vacuum. Vacuum is highest when engine is sitting at idle. Problem can be caused by vacuum line leak; vacuum check valve failure; vacuum reserve canister leak; intake manifold leak.
