1998 Pontiac Grand Am leaks antifreeze. What is wrong and how do I fix it?

I bought it used from a lady last week. Now reality has squashed me. Bad brakes. Other things. Today the temp gauge seemed really high so I looked in the antifreeze container and saw none at all. So I went to the gas station and bought a gallon of it. I poured it in thinking it would take only part of it but all of it went in. I did spill some, and there was a little dripping underneath. So I turned the engine on and got out and **** the door. Then discovered the doors lock themselves! So i had to call some place to unlock it. So the car was running with the doors locked. I looked underneath and there was a steady trickle of antifreeze coming from somewhere. It was nighttime so I couldn't see anything. The gas station didn't have ANY flashlights! The lock guy came and opened the car and told me maybe a hose sprung a leak or something. That would be okay, I could replace a hose. I asked if he thought it might be leaking out of the engine and he said he thought it would be mixed with oil if it was coming from the engine. _That sounded like a good thing_ So I went to a grocery store to find a flashlight. NONE. Hmmm... So I went to a pharmacy because they ALWAYS have all sorts of junk flashlights for sale, right? BZZZZT! All they had was an expensive windup kind; good idea but impractical to look underneath a car! So, I bought another gallon of antifreeze to put in when this leaks out. But I asked the cashier if he ever had a car with an antifreeze leak. He said of course he had, that it was the water pump that had gone bad and it was leaking out. **gulp** I asked him if it leaked out of the pump itself or out of a hose. He looked slightly puzzled but then said it _could_ leak out a hose but his had it leak right out of the pump. **GULP**
SO.
I cannot see what is leaking or where. But a stream comes from off the metal underneath the car beneath what might be underneath where the antifreeze tank is.
What do you think is likely to be leaking and how do I fix it myself? I am as poor as you can be, I guess, so I need as cheap as I can!

You mentioned that the leak is under the surge tank. I have seen the hose going to the bottom of the surge tank to wear out and leak. If it seems like your leak is coming from the front part of the engine then it sounds like the water pump is in fact leaking out of the weep hole. I would check the hoses going to the surge tank first though.

'ETS OFF' Light

My traction system used to work. Then one day i was driving and it turned itself off. The ETS off light is illuminated, no other lights are lit. When i hit the button on my shifter to turn my ETS on and off, the light just stays on saying that the tractions system is off... how do i get this light to turn off and get the traction system running again? what could be the problem?

the first thing that comes to mind is a wheel bearing/wheel speed sensor in the a.b.s. brake system. usually the abs and/or brake lite will come on also. maybe check fuses in cab and under hood just to be sure. make sure brake fluid is full. a diagnostic scanner that could access a.b.s. codes may be necessary to pinpooint problem.

how much does it cost to replace the lifters

how much does it cost to replace the lifters

Answer

Typically one does not replace all the lifters except during major engine overhaul and when Camshaft and Camshaft bearing is being replaced as well. It is much more common that noisy valve train is misdiagnosed and is really a sign of other problems. Noisy valves and upper end can be a sign of lowered oil pressure. As engines age and main bearing wears, oil pressure will naturally decline with time. However if excessive wear occurs, or if dirt / foreign object has clogged vital oil gallery supply, wear can accumulate much more rapidly.
In short...less oil pressure means more wear...more wear means less oil pressure...
I would first get an idea of the overall condition of the engine. A dirty engine/lifters can first be treated by draining one quart of oil and replace with a quart of transmission fluid and run it for a day or two. The detergents can loosen and clean oil gallerys and lifters. Then drain, change filter, and fill with 10W-40 (4.5 quarts). Otherwise main bearing/oil pump renew or engine overhaul might be in order.

Where is the expansion valve located on a 98 Grand Am 3.1?

Follow the tubing from the compressor to the evaporator that is mounted on the engine side of the firewall. There is a fitting right before the evaporator, that is where the orifice tube is.

how to replace head gasket and how to put it back in time when assembling back together on 2.4l (quad4) engine??

my 98 grand am 2.4l ran hot on me now it wont stay running unless i hold the gas down and it has a weak start and when i took out the spark plugs the first three cylinders were full of water so i suspect a blowed head gasket. any info on how to replace the gasket if not i will have to replace the whole engine because people have said it is hard to time the cam and chain when assembling

There will be marks on the cam gear and the crank gear. Some are dots, some are diamond shaped. You just line the two up so the top mark is directly over mark on the crank. You may have to turn the crank by hand which is easier with all the plugs out, to line it up. You will want to drain oil, change filter, and put in new oil to get rid of contaminated oil in oilpan.
If you fail, you are not talking about a lot of money to try to fix the top of the engine compared to engine replacement. For the most part, you could still tow it.
You could ask how much it would cost just to replace the gasket and let someone else bust their knuckles.
