Question about 2001 Ford Windstar

2 Answers

I ran out of gas last night and the van cut off. We put some gas in it but it wouldn't start. At first it was acting like it wanted to start but eventually the engine quit turning and all power to the car died. Is this the alternator or was it caused by me running out of gas?

It sounds like you ran down the battery as you tried to get it started. The alternator charges the battery when your engine is running.
If you get a fresh battery or a jump start, try cycling the key from off to the run position 4 or 5 times (pausing in the run position for 5 seconds or so). This will move some fuel from the tank to the engine with the electric fuel pump as you probably ran it dry.

Usually a sign of something draining the battery.
The machine test probably showed the battery could hold a charge and the alternator was charging the battery.
You may need to have someone check for a power drain.
When the key switch is off, there may be a weak short to ground or a relay or component that is using power.

2006 Freestar. Ran fine last night. Wouldn't start

How many volts does your battery currently have? A cheap multimeter can tell you; I'm not saying the crew at Advance Auto aren't on top of their game, but they do work at Advance Auto... Anything less than 12v DC indicates a problem, and the battery probably won't have enough juice to turn your motor over with less than 10-11v. If your battery voltage is >12v it sounds like you've got a bad starter solenoid (some vehicles integrate these with the starter itself, some do not). Try giving it a few whacks with a rubber mallet or a hammer handle (aka the wooden part).

My first thought would be: If you repaired an emissions hose, take the car back to Auto Zone (or another parts supplier) and let them tell you what code comes up now. You eliminated one problem, now you have to find another.
I wouldn't do a fuel pump without more information.
