Question about 1999 Cadillac DeVille

MY 1999 DEVILLE OVERHEATS AFTER ABOUT 20 MINUTES OF DRIVING. THE OIL IS NOT CREAM-COLORED AT ALL. THERMOSTAT IS WORKING FINE, IT HAS A NEW RADIATOR, tHERE IS NO COOLANT IN RADIATOR, JUST TAP WATER--I JUST BOUGHT CAR AND WISH TO KNOW HOW TO FIX IT. CERTAINLY HAVING TAP WATER WOULD NOT MAKE IT OVERHEAT--OR WOULD IT?--- WHEN I PUT BATTERY ON CHARGER THE CHARGER IS READING THE OPPOSITE OF WHAT IT IS SUPPOSED TO READ( iT IS CHARGED EVEN THOUGH IS SAYS CHARGING--

You need a 50/50 mixture of antifreeze and water in the cooling system. Yes tap water only will make a vehicle over heating because coolant has chemicals in it that pulls the heat out of the engine. Drain cooling system, add the appropriate amount of coolant. Run engine long enough to get it hot enough to open thermostat then another 10 minutes this will all coolant to get in engine. Your over heating should stop

You may have an air lock in the system. This is a pain with these engines, and Cadillac has a specific procedure for removing them (see Alldatadiy.com). Otherwise, your water pump may be shot, or there is a blockage somewhere in the cooling system (are you absolutely sure the thermostat is working - installed the right way?).
Also, are both the radiator fans running when it starts to overheat? If not, may have a blown fuse, or the relay for the fans may be shot.
All car manufacturers strongly recommend using an all-type antifreeze because it also contains corrosion inhibitors - tap water alone is not a good idea.

Most good battery chargers will trickle charge a charged battery - this is normal. Even with the car shut off, there will be a small drain on the battery to keep the electronics alive. HOWEVER, for this same reason, it is never a good idea to use a battery charger while the battery is in the car, or to jump start a dead battery in the car - the electronics do not like this.

SOURCE: 1996 cadillac deville overheat..radiator?

Check for coolant flow at the Purge line, this is a common problem on the Northstar.
There is a small diameter hose coming from near the top of the coolant tank, this is the purge line.
With the engine idling, pull the purge line from the tank,if there is no coolant flow from this small hose,it is blocked and this will cause overheating. If the hose is clear, check for blockage at the nipple on the tank.

SOURCE: 2001 cadillac deville, overheats without loss of coolant

First, provided their are no visible coolant leaks and/or loss of coolant with no signs of leaks, I would thoroughly flush cooling system and replace coolant, then check and/or replace thermostat (you can place thermostat in boiling water to check for proper function), if you have tried these 2 steps and still are experiencing overheating you may need to replace your water pump which can be a tricky job if you're unfamiliar and try to do it yourself, however, I could walk you through it if necessary. Also visually check your radiator hoses for bulges, wear ,etc along with heater hoses etc. You may want to also check radiator fins to see if they are dirty/obstructed and clean if necessary. Let me know if I can assist you further and how it works out

The most common overheating problem with the Northstar engine is a blocked purge line. It's job is to purge air out of the cooling system.
There is a small diameter hose coming from near the top of the coolant tank, this is the purge line.
With the engine idling, pull the purge line from the tank,if there is no coolant flow from this small hose,it is blocked and this will cause overheating. If the hose is clear, check for blockage at the nipple on the tank.Or trace the hose back until you find the blockage. The hose goes in to the engine to a crossover and comes out the other side to near the thermostat housing, the blockage may be there.

The most common overheating problem with the Northstar engine is a blocked purge line(small hose). The purge line is designed to purge air out of the cooling system.
There is a small diameter hose coming from near the top of the coolant tank (not the cap) ,this is the purge line.
With the engine idling, pull the purge line from the tank,if there is no coolant flow from this small hose,it is blocked and this will cause overheating.
If the hose is clear, check for blockage at the nipple on the tank.Or trace the hose back until you find the blockage.
The hose goes in to the engine to a crossover and comes out the other side close to the thermostat housing, the blockage may be there.
Also note that the cooling fans don't come on until the coolant temperature hits around 225 degrees.
During normal highway driving the fans will very rarely come on(if at all) due to constant air flow through the radiator. They will only usually come on in heavy traffic conditions on a hot day.
But......if you have the Air Con switched on, the fans will run all of the time.

The radiator cap may not be holding enough pressure. Also, don't drive without the thermostat. It will mess up the closed-loop operation of the fuel injection system. That trick worked 40 years ago.

When i was driving my 1999 mercury cougar , i blew the head gastet can you u help on any information i may need to try and save this car from the junkyard .thank you for your help

go to autozone. there is a headgasket fix. it is cost about 20 dollars. its in a green bottle. make sure to follow the instructions to a T. this will work I have done this to my 99 cougar. everyone said i was crazy and to get rid of the car, spent the 20 dollars and its running great. better than paying 1500-2500 for a new headgasket. Oh you might want to flush out your oil as well, there might be water in your oil. First check the oil cap, if there is a light brown cream colored gunk under it, make sure to change it and replace the oil. I promise this will work.

When a Cadillac (Northstar) overheats, It will give the message to change the oil. If you run a Northstar and keep running it long enough it will start shutting off cylinders and stop the A/C compressor to help protect itself. In this condition I would check for a blown headgasket. Possibly your technican will find the problem. Could also be stuck thermostat, dirty radiator Thanks

if you drive directly with a cold engine onto a highway speed road it isnormal for the temp to go high then low its because the thermistat isnt fast enough to keep up with the heat produced. ive noticed all of my cars did this when i lived right on a highway.if it is ok the rest of the time i wouldnt worry about it unless actually overheats

1999 cadillac deville overheating

my husband did everything that everyone else did that had this overheating problem. It was so weird that my engine cooled at a light and heated up going down the road. I have a north star 4.6 engine and this is natorious for happening. my check engine light also came on and so I had a diagnostics done which told me my #1 injector wasn't firing , car ran like **** as well. After putting in a new water pump and plugs, ect. and realized injector was good a friend told him we could have a blown head gasket. So just to see if this was the problem I went to buy a bottle of glassbeads and the auto parts guy told us to purchase a bottle of BARS STOP LEAK BLOCK SEALER NOT RADIATOR BUT BLOCK SEALER $31.99 . He followed the directions and we waited 24 hrs. before driving it. What ever the problem was has stopped my car runs like brand new and I am loving it again. no over heating no injector problem, runs great.......I hope this helps. I know its probly a temperary fix but its a fix and now we know what the problem was. SASSY
