Could be a number of things, 1. water pump not working 2. Thermostat stuck (replace if its boiled) 3. air lock in system. 4. Head gasket. 5. cracked head/block. I presume you have checked that you belt is not broken, are there any signs of leaking around the waterpump? if there are, change the pump, If the engine has overheated, change the thermostat. these are the most common things, other than these 2 it is going to take further examination for cylinder head problems or blocked water ways. Go for the thermostat first, its probably the cheapest part to replace, and see if that cures your problem.

Hi,
To start with you have to do this:
With the engine cold, start the car and say after 30 to 40 secs. open the radiator cap.
Carefully and slowly, cause if the problem is either in the cylinder block or cylinder head this shows immediately as water would be compressed in the radiator ( even though the motor is still cold ).
If nothing happens and you would not notice any bubbles in the radiator, then we have to talk again.

There should be a electric fan. Watch your temperature while it runs and when it gets up to around operating temperature the fan should kick in and run.

Did you install a new thermostat and make sure to bleed all the air out of the system when you replaced the radiator? If you didn't, or installed a Stant thermostat, replace it with a FACTORY OEM thermostat. Make sure the cooling system is bled by opening your radiator cap (WHILE THE CAR IS OFF AND COLD), starting the car and running the heater. Add coolant to the radiator as the engine heats up, until is at normal operating temperature AND starts spitting coolant back out.

Not sure if you know, but there are TWO fans...one for the a/c cooler (front) and one for the radiator (rear). I have the exact same car with similar issues with minor overheating, and from my observation, the actual cooling fan for the radiator is mounted on a pulley directly behind the radiator, and I haven't located any type of electrical wiring for this particular fan.

From info I gathered at different forums, this fan appears to be engaged by some type of clutch, I suppose similar to that of an a/c compressor. However, I haven't been able to gather much info as to how the fan actually "operates", such as how does it know when to engage and disengage, and whether or not this signal is mechanical (physical), or perhaps some type of built-in sensor (electrical).

I haven't been able to look at any type of diagrams or schematics, so I can't say with 100% certainty that there isn't wiring for this fan, but so far it appears that replacing the clutch assembly, or perhaps the entire fan with the clutch assembly, appears to be the fix for this problem. I haven't been able to apply this action to see if it is a definitive fix because I'm currently having issues getting my 2000 sportage to start. But if you still haven't come up with a corrective action, I'll be sure to keep you posted once she's running again.

Envoy cant get to water pump to change it. Removed grill exc but can't get radiator out and fan out


The fan and fan shroud need to be removed as one assembly. You will need a 34mm wrench to get the fan clutch removed from the water pump. Once the fan clutch is unthreaded and the bolts that hold the fan shroud to the radiator are removed you will be able to remove the fan clutch/ shroud assembly from the vehicle. You do not need to remove the radiator nor can you remove the radiator without first removing the clutch/shroud. You will notice that when you are removing it it will be a little tight getting around the inlet for the upper hose on the radiator . Once the shroud is removed trim a notch where the shroud was hitting on the inlet and I will make install a lot easier. If you have any questions let me know. Thank you for using fixya.com!

2002 gmc envoy is over heating have changed the thermostate and the put new radiator but its still over heating any suggestions


Have the FAN CLUTCH checked. they are a common failure. Get a AC DELCO or the part from the dealer. Why was the radiator replaced? Heater work OK? A/C works OK?

Possible fan clutch..Usually if its a fan clutch it will run hot sitting still but cool off once going down the road..If it takes a while to run hott then i would suspect a clogged radiator..When you drain it did it look like all the antifreeze came out..Ive seen half the radiater clogged up where half of it drained but the clogged section stay in the radiator

Temp gauge is in normal, 200 degree, range when starting. Within a few minutes of driving goes up to 250, right below orange line. No leaks found, coolant level appears fine. Any ideas?

I am getting a P1481 code, From what I see it could be the Fan Clutch, but would it also cause it to shift at a higher RPMs, It only does it some time.


OK, loss of cooling fan speed. I will say this is plausible. I'll take your word for it (sometimes my online resource is not complete).

  1. Drain the coolant from the engine.
  2. Remove the air cleaner assembly from the engine compartment.
  3. Remove the air resonator assembly from the engine.
  4. Remove the inlet radiator hose from the radiator.
  5. Detach the transmission oil cooler lines from the fan shroud.
  6. Disconnect the fan clutch connector. Fan clutch removal and installation gm-03-00-1477.gif

  7. Use a J 46406 fan clutch remover and installer to remove the fan clutch from the water pump.
  8. Remove the upper mounting bolts from the fan shroud.
  9. Remove the fan shroud from the radiator by lifting the shroud and pushing inward.
To Install:
  1. Attach shroud to the radiator. Torque the bolts to 21 ft-lb (28 Nm).
  2. Use a J 46406 fan clutch remover and installer to install the fan clutch onto the water pump.
  3. Connect the fan clutch connector.
  4. Attach the transmission oil cooler lines to the fan shroud.
  5. Install the inlet radiator hose to the radiator.
  6. Install the air resonator assembly onto the engine.
  7. Install the air cleaner assembly into the engine compartment.
  8. Refill the engine with coolant.

SR5 fan clutch problem???


Try replacing your radiator cap. The fan clutch could be a problem. It is not real hard to change out. It should be pretty self explanatory if you look at it. They are not controlled by any wires or anything. Your water pump is driven by your timing belt so if either of those need replaced, always do both.

I have a 89 f-150 that is overheating on hills, but when I check the fluid levels everything is fine. What else can the problem be?

Check your radiator for external and internal obstructions (leaves, bugs etc on the a/c condenser or leaves between the condenser and radiator, rust or calcium deposits inside the radiator core all cause loss of heat transfer)
Also make sure that the system is full and that the electric fan and the clutch fan are operating properly. (electric fan should come on just above normal operating temp and clutch fan should not be "freewheeling" above temp either)
Note: If you need to have the radiator flushed, do it separately from the engine. especially the inline 6 and 4 engines rust up inside and if the system is flushed with the radiator connected, the debris will pack up inside it and actually can worsen the condition.

Hello, you may have a blockage some where in the system or possible air in the system. Double check your coolant levels, your cooling fans make sure they are coming on. Hope this is helpful.

Overheating


1. start the engine and leave the radiator cap open.
2. put a cardboard cover or a rug in the front of you radiator.
3. let it runs 20 minutes or more, see if it is overheated and see the water or coolant in the radiator circulated or not. If not, as soon as you have already changed water pump. thermostate and check the hoses, no leak, I think your radiator was blocked.
