A small but important part of your car's engine fuel delivery assembly, the fuel pump relay is an electrical component that controls the pump. Also known as a relay switch, this car part turns your fuel pump on and off when you start your vehicle and shut it off. Everytime you turn on your ignition, the relay switch lets the electrical current flow to the fuel pump. Once both the pump and your engine are running smoothly, the fuel pump relay automatically shuts off. The fuel pump will then be controlled by the oil pressure unit. In case your pump relay stops working, it's the oil pressure switch that will serve as a back-up power relay for the pump. Because the fuel pump relay is switched on everytime you turn on your ignition, you should hear a distinct sound (it could be like a whistling kettle or a blackboard being scraped) whenever you start your car. If you don't hear that distinct sound and your engine takes longer to crank up, you may have a problem with the relay switch. Fortunately, finding a compatible replacement relay for your vehicle is just a few clicks away at Auto Parts Warehouse. When you buy from our site, you can enjoy our free shipping services, low-price guarantee, and flexible payment options. So, if you need to replace your old relay switch for the fuel pump, buy one only from Auto Parts Warehouse!

2002 cavalier 2.4 will not start fuel pump runs has spark

FUEL PUMP ONLY HUM'S FOR 2 SECONDS WHEN YOU TURN KEY TO ON, NOT START, POSITION. YOU CANNOT HEAR PUMP RUN WHEN CAR IS RUNNING ! THIS 2 SEC., IS THE PUMP PRIMING ITSELF TO START ENGINE. YOU MIGHT BE HEARING EITHER THE POWER STEERING OR WHATEVER, NOT THE FUEL PUMP!!!!!! GIVEN THE YEAR OF THIS CAR, YOUR FUEL PUMP COULD BE BAD, CHECK FUSES, RELAY, GROUND WIRES, TO PUMP, ALSO CHANGE YOUR FUEL FILTER !!!!! AIR FILTER ALSO !!!!!!! SPARK PLUG WIRES SHOULD ALSO BE REPLACED !!!!

Just brought 2000 chevrolet venture van have fuel pump isseu but not pump i checked fuse box someone have a small black wire connected to fuel pump fuse and fuel pump relay that blow so i replace both...

It's possible someone used the jumper wire to load side of fuel pump relay, gray wire. That supplies voltage to fuel pump motor, the fuel pump fuse is hot all the time. The fuel pump will run all the time even with key off, running down the battery. They used the jumper because of some kind of problem. Can you unplug the relay and check relay terminals, where the relay plugs in. Use a test light, either a problem on the load or control side of relay. Are the relay terminals numbered, like 30 and 87, maybe 85 and 86 also?

Put new fuel pump now the pump runs but the power wire only has 7 volts of power how much is it suppose to have

If your pump is running on 7vdc, you are not getting enough fuel pressure to sufficiently supply the engine with gas, and it will run rough, sputter, surge, backfire, all manner of unpleasant things. If this is the case, and you are reading 7vdc while the pump is connected, this could indicate a problem within the fuel pump or fuel pump electrical circuit. Turn the car off, unplug the fuel pump wire harness from the fuel pump, insert your voltmeter leads into the vehicle-to-fuel pump wire harness connector, then have a helper turn the key to "on." You will have two-three seconds before the computer senses no fuel pump return signal, and shuts off voltage to the fuel pump. Observe the voltage coming from the vehicle wire harness to the fuel pump connector, it should be 11-13vdc. If it is, and only drops to 7vdc when connected, there is a partial short in the wiring from the point the fuel pump plugs into the harness, or the pump just creates a large voltage drop. Every device causes a voltage drop while in use, but 5vdc is too much of a loss. Re-examine the fuel pump installation, and make sure there are no obstructions over the fuel pump inlet, and that the wire harness inside the tank is okay.

1991 chey pick up 1500 electric fuel pump

Hello, Only 2 wires show be hot when fuel pump power is supplied. I think that the gray wire is the power side so ck that wire to ground. Also, fuel pump power is supplied from your oil pressure switch and the fuel pump relay only supplies power for a few seconds until the truck is started. Keep in mind that the fuel pump will only run a few seconds by just turning the switch on. If you want the pump to stay on without the motor running , you will have to by-pass the fuel pump relay.
I hope this will help.
