Are you sure is the drive shaft and not the Differential with pinion loose,or the Prop shaft on the joints which might be worn. Just jack it on the one side unless you have limited slip where you jack it in the center of the diff and for safety precautions put stands under the car and ask somebody to start the car putting gear release clutch and rev it up to 2000 revs and listen where from the knock is coming from. Remember take safety precautions first.

I have just bought a 1971 Spitfire mk4 and there is a knocking noise coming from the shaft nearest the diff. Seems like it is coming from this area when it is driven. It stops when the car stops.

Replace the drive shaft universal joint connecting the drive shaft to the rear/differential. Block the car front and rear of a tire, put your sprints shift leaver in neutral, lay on your side on the ground next to the car and reach in and grasp the drive shaft ay the rear and shake it. If it moves up and down and side to side, the u-joint is shot. Replace it.

How to change rear bearings in 1999 mustang

Remove the differential plate. Once off you will see a large pin going threw the diff. Turn the diff until you see the bolt(remove it) that will let you pull it out. Remove the rear tires and brake system. Don't disconnect the brakes/lines, let them hang. Push the axles in, remove the clips that hold the axles, then remove the axles. Just a suggestion, I would replace all the bearings. The axles bearings and seal by the brakes, the diff bearings, and the pinion bearings. To do the pinion bears, remove the drive shaft, remove the big nut at the yoke. Use an air hammer or a hammer and punch to knock the pinion out. Replace all the races also. They also have to be knocked out and in. This job will take several hours to finish.

Mitsubishi Shogun 03 plate, 3200cc, oil leak from offside rear diff, I understand that I may need both the companion and drive shafts replaced, can you confirm this please and also whether I can drive it...

it depends on how much oil is leaking from the diff.you could try it for a short distance and see how much you loose/you have to top up .times 17 that is if it lasts.if its a 4 wheel drive ,put the drive in the front and take it easy to the work shop for mending.all the best

Drove my suburban in the driveway, tried to back out and it sounded like i hit something in the back under vehicle, there was nothing there. now vehicle will not move at all. i am getting alot of different...

1)check that the park brakes are not seized on.
2)check the driveshaft where it connects on the differential.
broken driveshafts and universal joints are common on those.

1992 mitsubishi lancer 4x4 rear diff cluncking grinding

If I recall correctly, the axles have splines into the diff and also into the hubs. Removing the diff requires the trailing arms to be disconnected from the control arms to swing the axles enough to slip out of the diff.

Most likely, you need another rear diff. to be sure, the old part will need to be removed and inspected for damage. Sounds like some metal or a bearing got ruined from lack of lubrication, like a chipped tooth or a binding bearing. Make sure the rear driveshaft u-joints are OK. while you're at it. Have the Discovery put on a rack with the rear axle lifted, so the rear wheels can be spun by hand to listen to the rear diff. Sorry about your troubles
