Question about 2002 GMC Envoy

2002 envoy trans burned out second 1 just melted

Rebult trans lasted 30 days and just started to up shift then down **** then went out the high speed gears no high speed gears trans fluid is black-- and what is the transfeer case supose to have in it--does the trans fluid go from the trans to the transfere case--other words does it mix?

Transfer case fluid is different from the trans fluid, transfer case takes a Blue fluid made by G.M. can't think of the name of it, and trans takes Dex III or IIII read manual, if it is getting to transfer case then you deal between the trans and transfer case is bad causing it to **** the fluid out of trans, need to change the seals this time. Car Quest sells a 1 piece seal that seals both units instead of 2 different seals. Good Luck

I ran into this concern with my 2002 and my wife ran into the almost identical problem with her 2003. this may sound silly,, but it was the clutch fan. Extreme loss of power from time to time came first. Then a roar of the what seemed like the engine when stopping. Actually cut off after it started to roar at highway speeds, and had absolutely no excelleration from time to time. Sometimes all of the symptoms completely went away. After taking mine to the dealer several times, finally they got it right and replaced the fan clutch. When my wifes 2003 SLt started doing the exact same thing as my 2002 had done, we both knew what the problem was, and the dealer did a quick fix. $600.00. Perhaps this should have been a recall feature, but never was. Everyone that I know that has an envoy, somewhere around the 72,000 and 103,000 mile mark has had this problem and have had to have the clutch fan replaced. It may sound like the vehicle is going to have to be junked,, but that is all it needs.

i would try to get down to the linkage adjustment and see if maybe it is not adjusted properly or if it jumped out of alignment. Place the transmission in park and the selector in park after loosening nut and then tighten down the nut.

I would start with a transmission fliud and filter service.

I would then have the trasnmission checked out by a transmission shop. The transmission most of the time has the direct drum band is starting to go. The shops can rebuild it no problem, This is a very common failure wiith the trasnmission.

not sure if this is the answer yet but i have the same problem with the same codes i work at an auto parts store and a few of the techs that are customers have lead me in the direction of changing the ignition switch, i am doing it today will let you know if it solves the problem

More than likely. one of the front wheel speed sensors has gone bad. I believe the computer uses this input as well as the speed sensor on the transmission to determine shift points. In order to find out which sensor is bad, a technician will need to hook up a high-end scan tool.

The two units do not share or mix fluids. The transmission needs automatic transmission fluid and the transfer case uses ONLY Auto-Trak II fluid (only available at GM dealer). Do not put any other fluid in either.

My brothers 2000 ford ranger the fuse went out to the speed sensor. I change the speed sensor because it did not shift out of 1st gear and the speedometer stopped working. I then found out the fuse was missing in the fuse panel. My brother could not tell where the fuse went but when I put a fuse in it started shifting and the speedometer started working. everything was good. You should have a code if it is the speed sensor.

The reason the first one went only 120,000 miles,
was because, I would guess you never changed
your trans fluid every 30,000 miles.

The current one may have a 50/50 chance, if you change
the correct solenoids or whatever is necessary to save it

Don't use any vehicle with any trans issues,until resolved

it either blew the trans or more likely there is not fluid left in it. look for a huge leak such as a cooler line or front seal leak. that whine is bad,its the hydro pump in the trans burning up, dont slip the trans! itll take about 30 seconds of that and its fried

if i understand correctly, your questions is why the transmission should be replaced. well if your main harness was burned chances are if it got that hot that it burned the clutch, then it cooked tyhe oil in the trans mission and melted the seals and most likely warped the gear train inside the transmission

Codes p1529, p0704. problem defined, and how to fix.


My wife's 2002 Hyundai Accent has developed the same p0734 code. I have researched this issue for weeks. Tried doing a soft drain of the black-burnt fluid until it finally drained red then changed oil filter. Have narrowed down exactly what is happenning. First off, it shifts fine all gears, up and down until transmission fluid heats up-about 10-15 miles. Actually it ran even further the last time-30 miles until I got on the interstate and hit 55. I was manully able to run by turning OD off and soft pedalling the gas when turning OD on. The problem may begin, after the fluid is hot I think when you kick the gas in overdrive or at the high speed the 4th gear can keep up the speed ratio, it can't take it over 50 at all. The car lurches and goes into safe 3rd gear mode with these issues. When I finally took the pan off, I found most all of the peices of a skinny ring about 1-1-1/1 inch diameter. This in itself may be the kiss of death but I think once the fluid burnt and parts started breakng down, a transmission replace is enevitable. I believe and correct me if I'm wrong, overheating of the fluid caused
the transmission breakdown. When I dropped the pan the fluid a drip burned my face but....the transmission cooler in front of the radiator was absolutely cold. Is this normal or is the cooler blocked up??? Or is there a circulator in the trans that broke and that is what the peices are from. I believe the broken pieces are from a pump part or bearng cover(4th)? Hyundai I found has the cheapest price for a trans now, around &1,250 as opposed to nearly $2,000 from Advance Auto. Hynudai insists you use THEIR fluid only so don't ever tell them you didn't, even though Valvoline is just find. Read you Warranties very careful these days. It is possible I read to take a top cover off the trans if you are a mechanic or ya know what your doing and can identify broken piece, maybe replace it. Otherwise...Well good luck. Hopefull the newer transmissions are better or we learn to take better care of our car's maintenance. They need health checkups just like us.
Don't forget, if the fluid is black, have someone flush the fluid cooler good or you will contaminate the new transmission.
