Clean the airflow sensor. There is a special spray to do this. DO NOT use carburetor cleaner. It will damage the sensor.

Clean the EGR valve and make sure it has current. replace with the exact part number and for your particular car if you have to replace it. But first check the idle position sensor located near the fuel injector system at the top. It has a plug that you remove.

SOURCE: Engine stalls when shifting into any drive gear.

It sounds like your idle air control valve could be going out on you.  The extra stress from being in gear can cause the car to stall out if the IAC valve isn't opperating properly.  The IAC is attached to the throttle body and is normally held on by two screws.  IAC valves are relatively cheap from AutoZone and easy to replace.  That would be my best guess based on your description.  Good luck and let me know if you have any other questions.  Thanks for an honest rating and for using FixYa!

My 92 legacy auto 4spd trans will stop if shifted into first gear and dosent want to move

-Check transmission fluid at idle in park position. If low, add more to full level and try to drive. You should be good to go.
-But if fluid is full. It's time to rebuild or new transmission
-When check fluid the engine must running and hot.

Good Luck

What is wrong with my car when it jerks in drive

jerks when?

moving the shift lever. with hand?

moving car. in gear, name the gear, drive, L or reverse?

jerks from, 1 to 2nd gear, 2nd to 3? or ? (or when IT down shifts)

pretend we are blind (we are) and cant drive car,(hopeless) and

tell us exactly what works and dont work driving.

hot /cold engine, fast /slow/ accelerating/ decelerating, up hills and what gears.

if engine is hot, is your idle at 800 RPM parked, in park.

y/s

if not the idle controls are out of control and when you shift to drive

IT will jerk. this is an engine problem.

there are lots of other symptoms.

Where do I check the transmission fluid for my 2003 buick lesabre

CHECKING THE FLUID LEVEL
Prepare the vehicle as follows:
  1. Park the vehicle on a level place. Keep the engine running.
  2. With the parking brake applied, place the shift lever in PARK (P).
  3. With your foot on the brake pedal, move the shift lever through each gear, pausing for about three seconds in each gear. Then, position the shift lever in PARK (P).
  4. Let the engine run at idle for three to five minutes.
  5. Then, without shutting off the engine, follow these steps:
    • The automatic transaxle fluid dipstick handle is the black loop located toward the rear of the engine. See Engine Compartment Overview for more information on location.
    • Pull out the dipstick and wipe it with a clean rag or paper towel.
    • Push it back in all the way, wait three seconds, and pull it back out again.
    • Check both sides of the dipstick, and read the lower level. The fluid level must be in the crosshatched area.
    • If the fluid level is in the acceptable range, push the dipstick back in all the way.

1989 Ford Crown Victoria wont go into reverse and drives in nuetral???

Sounds like your linkage slipped out of sequence. On your transmission there is a place where you can manually shift your tansmission through the gears. When you move the selector on the trani it should move the shifter as well. All the way up on selector should be park, then R,N,D so on. If you move the selector all the way up at your shifter reads something else, you need to adjust the linkage and put car in park with selector on trani in park and tighten linkage back up. Run through all the gears and you should be good.

Try to get it running a bit to warm up the exhaust. Take a point and shoot thermometer and take the temp of the cat. If temps exceed 400 degrees I would start to suspect a plugged cat.

Transmission shifts hard into second gear(auto trans). However, when shutting engine off and restarting, the hard shift will go away. It will come back in a few days. Doesn't seem to matter how many...

it may be a bad tps ( throttle position sensor ). it causes transmission shift issues, bucking, jerking, idle surging, engine cut off, surge while crusing down highway. if this does not solve problem, it may be a sticking valve body in transmission. have a good day !! for an automatic tranny.

My car is cut off complete when i drive, but in "P"parking is no problem, what can be?

To answer your question I must put this in two parts , Firstly if the idle is low and you shift from park to drive and the engine stalls this is due to the idle being too low. When you shift from park to drive the transmission puts extra load on the engine causing it to idle lower and thus can stall. Remedy to fix is to either screw up idle adjuster but most times it's because of built up carbon in the intake throttle body causing the accelerator flap inside to not fully close . This causes the throttle positioning switch mounted on the side of the throttle body to send the wrong signal back to the computer saying that the car is not at idling position when it is. Remedy to fix this is to spray in some Carby Clean into the throttle body and then some more while the car is running, all while holding revs up on motor so it will not stall ( use the whole can ).
Now the second part is that you can have a bad wiring problem with either a broken wire or bad connector . When you put the car into Drive from the park position the engine will rock ( this is on all front wheel drive vehicles ) If you have a broken wire or bad connector some where between the motor and cars wiring loom by the engine moving it can open circuit any connection that controls engine running . Remedy to fix is to put the car into park and physically move and jiggle wiring in engine bay until symptoms occurs , then it's up to you to repair the fault
