Check and see if your model have the hydrolic (not electric) coolant fan.If so pay attention to see if the fan is running very slow and never changes speed. If this is the case, check to make sure that the plug to the sensor that is located on back of the powersteering pump has not come loose. They are know to work there way off.If it is not unplugged than the sensor on back of the powersteering pump needs to be replaced. This will allow the proper flow of fluid and pressure to properly operate your fan. This may sound strange, but i buy es300's with this problem often because people are afraid of them and think there is a major problem. This will take only 5 minutes or less of your time.

Does a 1995 es300 also have this plug? I know the 92-93 es's did, but the 94 up have a little difference to them.

This is the best find I've had in eons!! Thanks for the advice, I just returned to my mechanic (who couldn't find anything wrong and I paid for new hose, rad caps, etc) and read your post to him. Guess what - he said he hadn't heard of that before, suggested I contact an auto electrician. I did, he located the plug to the sensor, found it wasn't connected, put it back on and charged me $20. What a bargain, it's working a treat. So thanks again for the tip.

With the engine running at operating tempature the electric cooling fans should be running. if they are not this means that one or more of the sensors could be faulty. either the coolant temp sensor on the intake manifold or the one on the fan assembly. also there could be a bad relay in the power distribution box under the hood. this would be a good place to start. with the engine running at tempature the fan should be running if it s not then go to the power distribution box and switch the relay of the a/c clutch with the radiator fan relay if the fans kick on then replace the fan relay if the fans do not kick on you have either a faulty temp sensor on the fan or the fan itself is bad. if the fan is running properly then it's a mechanical problem mostlikely your water pump is not circul;ating the coolant. to check this remove the radiator cap( remember if the vehicle is hot do not remove the cap it's under pressure ) touch the upper radiator hose if it is hot then the thermostat is open and it is ok if it is cold then replace the thermostat.if the radiator cap is removed and the vehicle is running you should be able to see coolant movement in the radiator if there is not replace the water pump

The ES300 in 93 does not have an electric fan, they are hydraulic. (unless there's a variant I've never seen) Also, the thermostat is in a housing connected to the lower hose, hot water flows out the lower hose from the thermostat and into the radiator, so you need to check if the lower hose is hot or just lukewarm when its overheating. You can test the hydraulic fan control module by either unplugging the temp sensor (just above the t-stat, lower belt side of the engine) or grounding pin op1 of the underhood diagnostic connector. It will normally run slowly until the engine is too hot, then kick into high speed. Blown headgaskets are pretty common on these, so getting a block test (blue chemical tester, or a four gas ) is a great idea.

replace spark plugs, spark plug wires, cap, ignition rotor, air filter, oil change, transmission flush, transmission filter&gasket .. That should do it.. It'lI be good if you could check your timing as well.. do this tune up every 15-20 thousand miles and oil changed every 3000 miles, depend on how much you drive it.
