That was a common complaint a few years back, due to the fact that the heater core is a little too much higher than the engine, which requires that extra push it gets when engine RPM's increase. One thing I did do on my Caravan was remove my hoses to the heater core, and use a small external pump with hoses to circulate C.L.R. through my core for a while, then let it sit with CLR in the core overnight.Next day I circulated it through again, both ways by reversing hoses, and then re-attached hoses, bled air out of system, and notice quite an improvement in heat at idle. Once cleaned out, the heater core allowed coolant flow through it better at idle. If your stumped by explanation, take it to an automotive shop, or a Rad shop, and get a quote on flushing that core out for you. I recommend the CLR, but it might be too time consuming for you , but a flush will probably show some noticeable improvement.

heater cores clog in taurus. way to know is this--engine fully hot--heat on reach down to the fire wall and grab hold of one of the heater hoses where it hooks to the core--one should be real hard to keep hold of because its that hot. If the other is close to the same the core is not clogged. But if the other is cold to the touch its clogged. You can remove the hoses and shoot garden hose water in one side or the other and break it loose usually

My 2005 Nissan Sentra 1.8s with 55,000 mi. blows cold air from the heater. Coolant not circulating in engine. Lower hose stays cool to touch. Both heater hoses cold. Changed thermostat - didn't fix it. Coolant not leaking or dirty. None in oil - no oil in radiator. Changed worn water pump belt - pump spins freely with no noise or resistance. Cooling fans come on after warm-up. Temperature gauge stays in normal range then jumps to hot and back again. Coolant good to 10 below - didn't freeze here yet. No other problems or repairs to car. Afraid to drive and make worse. Help!

These taurus' have a notorious problem with the blend door actuator(controls hot and cold air mixture) failing.This is located in the cab of the car underneath the dash right in the center.This is not a diy project unless you have fairly extensive mechanical background.What you can check with ease though is to make sure that your coolant is full, this can cause a no heat condition.Also get your car up to normal operating temp and place your hands on the inlet and outlet if the heater core hoses, on the engine side of the firewall, and make sure both hoses are hot, if they are both hot then it is a blend door issue, if not then you have a restricted heater core, you can back flush your heater core by removing the hoses and placing a garden hose to either side and flushing it thru.
