You should only have to release the ball joint from the steering knuckle and remove the axle nut from the axle.Quite often need to use a air hammer or dead blow hammer to get the axle to release from the center hub hole.

change the plugs and the air filter &try not to speed, that always consomes more fuel. if that dont help, change the plug wires

Obvious things first. replace your air cleaner, fuel filter and put in a good quality fuel injection cleaner. do this for at least two fuel tank loads. Clean the injectors and make sure your engine is tuned. It will be fine after that...
