There is a large drain plug on your trans pan,in the center of it is an allen head plug, while engine is running (warmed up an trans. in park) remove allen plug-if any fluid dribbles out then your ok- if not,( i used an empty gear lube bottle with the tapered cap, filled it with mercon5 ) stiCk the tapered spout up the removed plug hole an squeeze as much mercon 5 in as you can, then pull away an let excess run out- have a pan under trans to catch excess--be sure to re-install plug b-4 shutting engine off,or u lose fluid an trans will be low again

Never ever bring a jetta to a volkwagen dealer. They will bend you over and rape you.
All you have to do is remove the top plug with a hex wrench.

if it is a manual transmission you have to check it from under the car by opening the fill plug. if fluid starts flowing out your full if not than you need to service it.
if it is an automatic it will be close to the firewall and hard to spot. but it is there. if you have 45,000 miles on it you should have the transmission serviced whether it is an automatic or manual.
