You can find the oil recommedations in the owwners manual or call the dealer, however I like changing all oil with synthetic oil to get the right oil for your differential go tothe parts store and ask them what is recommended, they have charts For the right oil, as each oil manufacture is different.

What kind of oil is needed in the rearend

If it did not have oil it would make the noise going straight. Check your brakes and the wheel bearings for play. Oil should be a GL5 70-90 wt gear oil.

I need to add gear oil to my truck but have no idead how or were it is located. please help

to add gear oil, that is if you want it in the rear differential, there is a plug hiden on the side of it near the center and put oil in till it runs out on its own, if you mean the transmission , if its an automatic put it it the tube where the dipstick goes in , but if its a standard, there ie a plug on side of trans. mid way of trans . same as rearend fill till it just comes out or put your finger in hole and if you can feel the fluid with finger its good.

What type of lubricant is required for the limited slip rearend and does it also require an additive?

A good gear lube, like an 80-90 weight gear oil, and yes, a limited slip also needs a limited slip additive. This comes in a little bottle, add it first, then the other gear oil.

Gear Ratio

there should be a tag on one of the rearend cover bolts indicating the ratio.if not remove cover count all the teeth on the ring gear and pinion, divide the ring gear # by the # of pinion teeth and that will be your ratio.

Changing rearend oil 04Ford Explorer

ok, i did some research and there was a recall for this vehicle about putting the wrong fluid causing the gears to fail, if you replaced the fluids with this recall you are fine and just take the plug out and drain. check for the required fluid specs. i can help you with that later on.
if you didn't replaced the fluid , then you most likely have a worn set of gears and will recommend to take it to them to fix their initial failure " mistake "
