Check Fluid Levels when car is warm and running in neutral. Next, change the pan gasket and filter and fluid. NEVER let a shop do a T TECH Transmission Service. That sucks it out backwards and destroys the filter and will kill the transmission. make sure you drop the pan and replace the gasket and filter and the fluid.

Check fluid lever first. if it's full is the fluid a brownish color and smell like onions? If it does you need to replace the filter and fluid, about 14 quarts. If the fluid is ok then you have a slippage problem and the transmisson will have to have the pressure ports tested to see if third is burned out or the tork converter is failing. This needs to be done by a shop. however a fluid and filter change will fix many transmisson problems. You will want to add lucas oil condtioner as well to soften up the bands in the transmission.

1995 chevy regular cab 4.3l v6 2wd wont go into overdrive

Sounds like it is stuck in second gear. Overdrive only drops rpm by a couple hundred. In third gears you should still be less than 3,000 rpm.

Second gear is a default gear when the transmission is in limp mode. Is the check engine light on? Does it shift if you manual shift through the gears with the gear selector?

Maybe the shift valve in the valve body is sticking, or shifter adjustment? Might be wise to contact TCI.
