Question about 2003 Pontiac Grand Am

1 Answer

2003 Pontiac Grand AM will not start. Security light is NOT on. Dealer replaced the switch(900 bucks) same issue 7 days later, replaced switch again, 5 days later same issue. Was told I had a bad battery. Replaced battery. 8 days later same issue. Replaced battery 4 times. Had alternator and starter checked, OK, will only start if battery is fully charged. Replaced Belt, belt tension, battery leads, and checked voltage while car is running, 14.5 volts to battery, 13.4 with everything on (AC, rear defoger, all windows up and down, radio, and lights on High). When I try to start it now after changing the battery again, nothing. I have head lights, blinkers, mileage and a check engine light. How do you reprogram the Body Control Module, with out a owner's mannuel?

Sounds to me like you better find another dealer or possibly an auto electric dealer they should have done it right the first time

Security Light comes on and then car won't start a day or two later unless I leave the key in the start position for 10 minutes

Most times, the ignition switch is the problem. After installing the replacement, you will need to leave the key in the run position for ten minutes the first time. Shouldn't have to do it again.

THIS IS EXACTLY THE REASON..... Man i hate Grand Ams. This problem happens in EVERY GM vehicle. But for some reason Grand Ams from 2001-2005 have this problem the MOST. This can be very costly to fix, but is also reasonably easy to bypass. Anyway, here is a link that explains EVERYTHING and gives you some ways to bypass this system so it wont do it again. Some advise, dont take this to a dealer. Ive heard horror storys about passlock security bills being upwards of 1500 bucks. Bypass this yourself and be rid of it forever.

Changed battery and fuses nothing car still does not want to start Ihave bumped the starter but still nothing.

Is the security light flashing? this happened to my mothers Grand Am 2004 in Jan 2010. WeTowed it to a dealer $500 later it was running. This week again same thing called tow truck the driver said he has seen this alot. he advised turn car to on for 15 to 30 min after security light stops flashing try and start car. It worked for my mothers car and saved us a tow and probably another $500.

Electrical problem

If you have the passkey system you might want to take it to the dealer to have it tested, and if that is ok then there is a way to bypass the security system which I had to do in my Bonneville.

2001 pontiac grand will not start all of a sudden. ran fine this

The problem may be the security issue. Do you see a security light? Dust gets into the ignition tumbler and causes a bad contact with the sensor prompting a false security issue.

I had the same problem and thought it was a fuel pump issue, but after a $500 replacement ordeal, I later encountered the same issue again.

To resolve:
Insert the key and turn on ignition tumbler to ACC on (Position prior to engaging the starter)
Wait around ~15-20 minutes (The security light will change... I believe it will flash when the security's been a long time...sorry)
Afterward, turn the ignition tumbler and off
Your card should start there after

Tumbler maintain: Blow some compress air to prevent this incident from happening.

Hopefully this will resolve your issue without the need of spending any further $$$!
