SOURCE: 1997 bmw 316i compact, thermostat??

this model has a dodgy stat, the 2 little lugs which hold the stat centre to the plastic case can break off this lets the water bypass and so it doesnt heat properly

it may be possible that your heater core was faulty and some has by passed it. open hood and check for incoming and outgoing heater hoses into firewall(dash of car). it is also possible that the heater core is plugged, try getting your cooling system flushed

This could be fuel filter clogged and/or impurities in the fuel system, fuel injection not adjusted properly or faulty coil. Hope this helps.

My BMW seems to be leaking oil from the rear underside

the leak is most likely coming from either the differential cover gasket or the input flange that the drive shaft attaches to, this is called the pinion seal.
