I have a 2001 dodge neon. Soon after I bought it I began experiencing overheating problems. I changed first the radiator cap then I changed the theromostat. I had to change the head gasket. I changed the water pump. And yet it still overheats. The coolant bubbles over into the resevoir and you can hear a lot of gurgling noise. The fan works. I don't know what else to do! Please help!

Does is overheat while idling or is it overheating when driving down the road? I had a similar problem however, my neon would only overheat when the car was parked and idling.

Big headache. Let an experienced professional handle it. Something maybe blocking circulation of the system, or a crack in the cylinder head. A few tests might reveal something-block test, compression test, radiator flow test. You could do it all with the proper tools, could even rent them for cheap. Was the cylinder head tested for pressure and straightness when it was off?

So it is not losing coolant anywhere except by boiling off?

I currently am having the same issue. I have traced the issue back to the fans. The fans would not kick on so i let it run to almost overheating temperature, and checked the fans.... nothing was working. I slammed the hood to test a wild hair idea that one of the wires or the fans wasnt getting power. When i slammed the hood, The fans kicked on and the temp. dropped. So now its on to wire chasing.

The broken blades are probably restricting water flow somewhere.

Hold throttle open to a normal highway RPM in the driveway and observe rad hoses for collapsing. Do your run up the road & see what rpm your at when gauge starts to move toward hot, then use that rpm, in driveway . You did run that engine for quite a while with rad cap off when you refilled coolant, with heater on correct?

If you have an automatic transmission, you may be experiencing torque converter clutch (TCC) lockup shudder. There is a solenoid in auto transmissions that engages a clutch in the torque converter to save gas on the highway. These frequently stick open and cause problems at stoplights. IF you have an auto, a pretty good way to check if this is the problem is to put the car in neutral at a stoplight (CAREFULLY) and see if the problem goes away. Also, the clutch should not engage until the vehicle is warmed up, so if your problem happens when your car is cold, this is probably not the issue. Sometimes, these solutions can be inexpensive. I fixed my own TCC solenoid on my 1993 Chevy for about $20. Other times it can get spendy.

The "service engine soon" light came on my 1997 dodge neon shortly after I put in some oil. I bought the car second hand so I am not sure what oil was used previously. I am wondering if anyone knows why it...

The Service Engine Soon Light means that your ECM (Computer) in your car has stored a Trouble Code for a Sensor or Component that needs attention or replacement. You will need a OBD II scanner to retrieve the code. Once you have the Trouble Code, a Mechanic or you can now diagnose the problem, fix the problem or replace the part. You can go to AutoZone and they can retrive the code for you at no charge.
