Question about 1994 Chevrolet Suburban

My 1994 surburban Power brake units using the hydro-boost system leaks power steering fluid from the hydro-boost unit located behind the brake master cylinder. WHY? Do i need a new master cylinger or a hydro-booster?

You need to either have the hydro-booster rebuilt or buy a new one.

Have you checked the master brake cylinder reservoir for brake fluid loss?

I don't suspect the master cylinder as you have replaced it... but am more suspect of a leaking brake line or fitting which should have
been discovered when you had the system bled.

The only time I ever had a rear brake problem with a 2500 series Chevrolet was due to seized rear brake caliper guide pins...as your calipers are also new that is not your problem.

If your brake pedal feels spongy and travels to the floor board you have air in the system, a brake fluid leak or a failure in the power steering system, such as a broken hose, broken power steering pump drive belt, or failed pump, would result in a loss of pressure to both the hydro-boost and steering.

You have what they call a hydro boost system, the power steering pump give power steering assist, and give power brakes, so if your power steering hose looses fluid you get not power steering and no power brakes, So check the power steering hose for leaks if there is no leaks replace the powersteering pump

The rear seal of the master cylinder plunger is leaking, you must replace the master cylinder to correct this.

I need to know where the power steering fluid goes in my 92 chevy blazer,, where is it located at???


There should be a resivoir near the front of the engine, generally on the drivers side. The cap usually has some raised lettering telling you that it is intended for steering fluid only. Hope this helps.

Power steering and brakes dont work are they connected somehow and how would i fix this problem


Hello cindygariepy: My name is Roger and I will help you. Yes they are connected. The truck uses a brake system called Hydra-Boost. There is no vacuum booster like the cars use. Hydro-boost brakes use the power steering system as a source of power assist for the brakes. You need to check to make sure the fan belt is still on the engine. Should the belt brake you will loose power steering and brakes. Next check to make sure the power steering has fluid. If you have a leak in the power steering system and the system is extremely low you will loose steering and brakes. Generally when the system is low you hear a noisy growl when turning the steering wheel. These are the usual problems that occur when you loose both the power steering and brakes at the same time. There is one other part that could cause the condition . That would be a hydro-boost failure. If it fails there would be a lot of fluid leaking at the driver side of the vehicle in front of the driver seat outside on the ground. Power steering fluid is a clear oil. Yes, your brakes are boosted by the power steering pump rather than by vacuum. I don't think it's air in the system. More likely your pump has failed, but you can try bleeding the pump. Here is a procedure from autozone.com:

Observe the following:
Use clean, new power steering fluid type only Hoses touching the frame, body or engine may cause system noise. Verify that the hoses do not touch any other part of the vehicle. Loose connections may not leak, but could allow air into the steering system. Verify that all hose connections are tight.


NOTE Power steering fluid level must be maintained throughout bleed procedure.

  1. Fill pump reservoir with fluid to minimum system level, FULL COLD level, or middle of hash mark on cap stick fluid level indicator.
    NOTE With hydro-boost only, the oil level will appear falsely high if the hydro-boost accumulator is not fully charged. Do not apply the brake pedal with the engine OFF . This will discharge the hydro-boost accumulator.
  2. If equipped with hydro-boost, fully charge the hydro-boost accumulator using the following procedure:
    1. Start the engine.
    2. Firmly apply the brake pedal 10-15 times.
    3. Turn the engine OFF

  3. Raise the vehicle until the front wheels are off the ground.
  4. With key in the ON position and the engine OFF , turn the steering wheel from stop to stop 12 times. Vehicles equipped with hydro-boost systems or longer length power steering hoses may require turns up to 15 to 20 stop to stops.
  5. Verify power steering fluid level per operating specification.
  6. Start the engine. Rotate steering wheel from left to right. Check for sign of cavitation or fluid aeration (pump noise/whining).
  7. Verify the fluid level. Repeat the bleed procedure if necessary.

I have a 2006 chevy silverado with a 6.6 litre diesle that has what i think is a power steering fluid leak up at the master cylander or break booster on the fire wall the hoses run from the power steering...


The Duramax trucks by Chevy and GMC use Hydro-Boost brakes, meaning that they use a hydrolic pump for the brakes and the steering. GM has had real trouble with leaky Hydrlic hoses on all their trucks for a few years (like my truck) for leaking coolant lines from the trans and as I found out today during my oil change, coming from the hydro-boost. These are replacable, but not under warrenty for you or me.

sounds like your hydro-vac went bad. this is located by your master cylinder inline. it uses your power steering pump to give boost to your brake system instead of a vacumn booster

if you got the hydro brake boost system .check your power steering pump hoses for leaks .check master cylinder is leaking. fill power steering pump and master cylinder with fluid. the one that is the lowest that the one leaking. if your hydro boost brake unit is leaking .replace it .if power steering pump leaking. it not the hoses replace it . because if power steering goes out brakes will also go out.
