Question about 1994 GMC Sonoma

I am having a problem after warm up and at idle speed the oil pressure drop low enought to trigger the check gauges light. I have been trying to trouble shoot the problem with oil changes etc. but it is probably a failing oil pump. where can I find information as to what kind of a job (cost) this might be, or if this is something I could do over a weekend, thanks Bob. 1994 gmc sonoma 4.3lv6 non vortec

4.3L Engine To Remove:

Remove or disconnect the following:
- Engine oil pan
- The oil pump bolt
- The oil pump
- Inspect the pins (oil pump locator) for damage
  1. Replace the pins if required
Clean and inspect all parts.

To Install:

Inspect for properly installed pins (oil pump locator). Note: Do not reuse the oil pump driveshaft retainer. During assembly, install a new oil pump driveshaft retainer.
Install or connect the following:
- The oil pump
  1. Position the oil pump onto the pins
- The oil pump bolt attaching the oil pump to the rear crankshaft bearing cap
  1. Tighten the oil pump bolt, Torque to: 66 lb ft (90 Nm)
- The oil pan

Hook up a test gage to the oil pressure switch pressure port and verify the oil pressure is good (about 20 PSI at idle hot engine) if it is ok replace the oil pressure sending unit.

this means a mechanical gauge test is required to check actual pressure warm idling if low below 20 psi then the oil pressure pump relief is stuck open or engine bearing are worn

Oil pressure drop with engine getting hot

You'll want to remove the electrical oil pressure gauge and check the oil pressure with a manual gauge to verify low oil pressure. If the oil pressure tests good with a manual gauge, then you either have a faulty oil pressure sender, or gauge in the dash (I rarely see faulty gauges). If the pressure is still low, suspect worn crankshaft bearings. There is also a possiblity that the screen to the oil pump is clogged. This can be visually checked by removing the oil pan and cleaned.

Oil gauge drops low at idle

Low oil pressure at idle can be caused by an engine with worn rod or main bearings due to (usually) high mileage . This however does not mean the engine is still not serviceable as long as the oil pressure is low only at idle. The pressure should at minimum get into the normal range at anything above idle speed.Not much oil pressure is really necessary at LOW speed. At low speed, as long as there is oil getting to the bearings, even at low pressure, you are OK. In a high mileage engine the oil pressure is often low at idle simply because the oil pump is turning slowly and cannot maintain higher pressure between the larger than normal crankshaft and bearing clearances. As speed increases the pump turns faster and supplies more oil and the pressure should go higher. Low pressure as long as it is only at idle is not a problem. However at higher speeds the pressure should be in the normal range. Such a worn engine can benefit from higher viscosity (thicker) oil such as 20W-50 in above freezing weather and 10W-40 in winter. That will increase idle pressure and the thicker oil film maintains a better film between the worn parts

2006 H2, 113K miles. DIC indicated Low Oil Pressure at idle. No engine noise, seems to run fine. Happens only at idle. Pressure gage rises correctly while accelerating, at steady speeds oil pressure steady...

Did you try changing the actual oil pressure gauge?

I think you should have an accurate mechanical oil pressure test gauge installed in place of the oil sending unit and check to see what the actual oil pressure is. If it's 15 psi or so at an idle and about 35 psi or higher at 2500 rpm then your pressure is good and means you have some sort of issue between the sending unit and gauge. If the pressure is low, say below 10 or 5 psi at an idle with a warm engine and doesn't improve much at higher speeds then you actually do have low oil pressure, most likely due to worn bearings inside the engine. An accurate test gauge should tell the tale and help you figure out what is wrong. Hope this helps out a bit!

Sounds like oil pressure is dropping low enough at idle to trigger these alerts.

You need to investigate this ASAP before you lose the engine too lack of oil pressure.

2001 Jeep Oil Pressure

Last week my 2001 Grand Cherokee with a 4.7 was dropping below 10 and my "check gauges" light and chime came on. My sending unit was bad. I could see it was bad because oil was getting through the unit and leaking very slow. It's located above the oil filter. Easy fix, but the unit was over $50 and the 1 1/16 special deep socket for sending units was over $10.
