Hello : my new/old volvo 1997, 940 is great but : one problem!!!!!!!!
ABS : warning light stays on during first drive of the day ; next drive a bit later it stops a few moments after starting.
and no sounds or feelings that the system is starting to be alert.
In holland it is APK disaproval!!!!!
It worries me ; any tips??

ABS light on constantly and brake warning light intermittently. Garage want 450 pounds for sensor and can't guarantee it will resolve.

Be very careful of BBA-Reman and other web rebuilders. Yes, they will replace parts inside your computer, but if this does not solve the problem you're simply out the money. They warn you about this on their website and Ebay store. The thing that really sucks about the Volvo system is that you can fail the ABS computer, or the pump, or one(or more) wheel sensors, and the system won't generate any trouble codes. That translates into $$ spent at a repair shop, while they experiment just like you would at home. Listen to Ginko. Test your wheel sensors one by one. Rebuild/replace the module as the last step in the chain. Take it from one who spent lots of money on so-called experts who did little more than check-and-replace until the problem went away.

I had the same problem. Undid the rear ABS connectors, cleaned them, added some WD40 and no problems now for three years. It's a while ago now but I think I had to get access to one of the connectors through the rear under the spare wheel area.

Volvo has lots of issues with this. If you have a speed sensor code for the right rear wheel speed sensor that keeps coming on, then you need a computer. New or quality reman is available.

Its most likely the ABS Control Module. It can be rebuilt at BBA-Reman. Just Google BBA.

First you need to have EBCM - electronic brake control module check for DTC'S - diagnostic trouble code's . If the light is on there is a code stored . I think most part stores can do this and for free . After you find out what code is stored , looking up that code in service repair information for diagnostic trouble shooting chart would be next step . There are a few codes too.

ABS/ASC module is faulty
CLASSIC ABS FAILURE SYMPTOMS:
- Most of the time, the problem is the ABS module or one of the 4 wheel speed sensors (& sometimes the brake pressure sensor)
- In my 2002 BMW E39 DSC, three orange (warning) cluster display lights lit, ABS, Brake, & DSC
- The 3 warning lights reset when the ignition is turned off, only to repeatedly reappear within minutes of normal driving
- The fault is often intermittent leading you to falsely believe you've resolved the problem (proper diagnosis is important)
- Sometimes the fault only appears when the engine is hot; other times only at speeds over 40 mph
- Carsoft may erroneously show a rear speed sensor failure; but just replacing the speed sensor may make no difference.
- All the work is in correct diagnosis of the problem; parts replacement is trivial (from 1 to six bolts in a few minutes)
- Hence, this BMW E39 ABS 3-warning light DIY will concentrate on understanding and diagnosis of the problem

it is possible but its also possible you have a wheel speed sensor acting up. you would have to have it scanned for codes

I had the same problem. Abs light would come on and I would lose all dash instruments. Hit a bump on the road and abs light would go off and dash would come back on. What I did to fix problem, lol I slaped the dash just to the right of instrument panel and it all came back to life. There seems to be a short there, and I slaped it back 3 times in a week and now for the last month it has stayed on.

I had the brake light switch replaced by a local dealer. Cost was $140 and it fixed the problem. Have driven the car for two weeks since and no lights and all systems normal.

ABS light comes on with ignition then should go off when you start the car.
If abs sensor does not turn off after disconnecting the battery, then there is a real problem, a faulty sensor or ABS malfunctioning.
When the ABS led comes on immediately after you start the car and stays on usually is one of the relays.
The main one is called surge arrester relay, if it is faulty usually there have been an overvoltage.
There should be two more, usually located behind the black plastic cover of the ABS.
Testing and changing the faulty relay can fix the problem.

If light turns off on startup, and comes back on when you reach some speed, usually you need to check the wheel sensors. You test them unplugging the sensor located behind the wheel and testing it for continuity with a multimeter.
Use Haynes manual to find locations and specs of relays.
Contact a qualified mechanic if you cannot fix it yourself, problems with ABS may compromise safety of the vehicle.
