Question about Pontiac Grand Am

1 Answer

My girlfriend has a 2003 3.4 liter pontiac grand am. sometimes when she turns over the engine, the car will idle very high. it will stay between 1500 and 3000 rpms. she has to hold the brake when she is driving in town, otherwise the car will take off on her. hte problem doesnt happen all the time though. sometimes the car will run and idle fine, other times it will idle at 1500 rpms, and other times it will stay up around 2500 or 3000 rpms, its really weird. i tried cleaning the IAC (idle air control valve), and i also tried replacing it, but neither of these fixed the problem. a friend of mine told me it could be the throttle position sensor, but i dont know if that is in fact the problem or even where the TPS is located. i would really appreciate your insight into what the problem might be and how to fix it.

Pontiac grand am I had a diagnostic reading at autozone for diagnostic codes po128,po440 and p1189 don't know what they mean for a 2003 Pontiac grand am gt 3.4 liter and v6 engine vehical

PO128 -- engine coolant low or thermostat not working
P0440 - EVAP system malfunction, gas cap loose - Cat convertors missing from car can cause this
P1189 - Engine Oil Pressure Switch Circuit -- CAT CONVERTORS MISSING FROM CAR can cause this.

Why wont my 94 pontiac grand am staying running

have you checked fuel volume and fuel pressure. also should check to see if the engine vacuum is sufficient(19-21Hg @ idle). what size engine and how many miles on it? the 2.4 liter is commonly known for jumping time and causing engine not to run or run poorly.

How many oxygen sensors does a 1997 pontiac grand am have and how would i know which one needs to be replaced, the car is idling high. I also need to replace the exhaust manifold gasketand i was asked was...

Your vehicle will have 2 O2 sensors. One before the catalytic converter and one after. replacing the O2 sensor will likely not solve your high idle issue. An O2 sensor that has gone bad will likely set a code and turn on the check engine light. Is the check engine light on?

I assume you have a 3.1 liter V-6?

The left exhaust manifold will be the one closest to the radiator. The righ will be the one closest to the firewall.

How much pressure should a 2003 Grand Am 6 cylinder in the a/c have of freon

The high side pressure depends on ambient air temperature, however a normal value for a fully charged system would be roughly 250psi. The low side should fluctuate between 40-65 psi at idle as the compressor cycles. Both pressures should stabilize or "balance out" when the engine is turned off.
I hope this answers your question, good luck.

Climate control switch does not work in lower modes only in high.

The pontiacs have an issue with the ignition switch, I have a 2001 grand prix that did the same. The ac fan would only work on 5 and the headlights would go off if on 1-4 replace the switch and all is fine.

Idle problem

throttle position sensor is what I replaced on mine. Could also be a short in a wire that controls throttle. That was 6 years ago and it was $100. Took it to a shop, that's all I got.
