Question about 1996 BMW 318
The key doesn't turn at all. Not even one click!!! the tumblers are completely jammed. I also just bought the Bently service manual but they don't offer a solution to my problem. I have been searching the web for days and at this stage I know I have only one of two solutions: to drill a small hole where the entry for the pin should be if the key would've turned, then use a pin to remove it; or drill straight through the center of cylinder to destroy the lock tumblers and then turn it to line up with the pin hole, and use the classic method to remove it. Before I attemp either, I need to know if anyone tried them and which one will work better or work at all? I already ordered a new cylinder from dealer so the problem is in removing the old one. Help please.

Easy, put the key in the ignition turn it one turn, then get a paperclip or something a little bigger in diameter, there is a small hole on the front of the ignition. put the clip inside the hole & it should release a keyway. then you simply pull the barrell out. you may need to wiggle it a bit to dislodge it.

Key broke off in ignition, but would turn on when the rest of key was inserted. Now it will not work at all. I'm broke. What would be the cheapest way to go? Go to a dealership, call a locksmith? Is this something a person can fix themselves?

Remove the battery for safty
It easy when you no how in my case the key just spin around
some time lock in place position one and half way and the engine stay on. my wife say the engine stay on.
ANY WAY IT TOOK ME TWO DAY I PUT THE PAPER CLIP IN THE HOLE I GOT A LARGE ONE FILE IT DOWN I COULD OF USE A SMALL PAPER CLIP WHEN I REMOVE THE BARREL SO EASY.
NOTE THE BARREL NEED GREASE AND THE LITTLE MECHCANICAL PART OUT SIDE THE BARRAL HAS TO MOVE FREELY SO GOOD GREASE AND RESEAT OF THE BARREL WORK FOR ME.
The reason it took two day i put the pin in the hole at the first position then twist the key clock wize untill it lock.when you move the key anti clock wize key should feel srung in my case some time it was not. keep trying the hole should be between the first position and half way,(1/4 of the way the pin should go in 22mm just short of wiggle it and pull at the key if it is not done right the key will come out i save $80 plus part keep trying..
The sea saw on the barrel is sring loaded the pin in the hole just push one end of the sea saw it so easy when you no how remember 1st position lock
move it 1/4 of the way the hole and the sea saw is just there just wiggle the pin..

Not to burst your bubble but this happened three times on my focus. The dealership is your best option and yes, I had to have it towed there. You can try calling the ford customer service line and explain your problem nicely. This is a common problem for the focus and they may extend the warrenty coverage( they did it for me)...you will have to pay 50 to 100 dollars but it beats tearing into the steering column only to find out that you will need to have it towed to the dealership anyways. Been there, done that, wont do it again.

the thing is that you can replace it, but the still will not run, the transponder and key have to be reprogrammed at the dealer only
