Question about 2006 Chevrolet Impala

My traction control light comes on after a few minutes of driving. It jerks at the stopping and power is reduced. This happens several times while driving. I had a throttle replaced but it still happens. I would like to disconnect the traction control. can this be done? What do I need to do?

It sounds like these things are all related. When the a computer sees a problem in the Electronic throttle system, it will dissable traction control, and give the reduced engine power alert because the powertrain computer does not know the value of throttle postion.
Codes will need to be scanned in the computersto begin diagnosis.

i fixed mine by pulling each and every fuse in all the fuse boxes and replacing them with new ones. the hhr fuses have a tendency to work loose and cause all kinds of little problems. i searched the forums for the answer to the traction control light problem and never found an answer that worked until i talked to a "shade tree" mechanic in my area and he told me to do the fuse thing. been a month now and no more problems.

Hello Jeremy.
When your traction light comes on it is indicating wheel spin on acceleration. To prevent wheel spin an onboard computer reduces engine power to limit the wheel spin. Some, if not most, cars equipped with this feature will also apply the brakes if wheel spin continues after reducing engine power.

1. Defective, loose or missing fuel cap
2. EVAP canister broke, hose cracked or not connected
3. Purge or vent solenoid defective
4 . Vacuum leak at engine po121 code po121 means Throttle Position Sensor/Switch A Circuit Range/Performance Problem . it is usually indicative of a faulty throttle position sensor or faulty wiring harness in the engine bay.

I just got my alternator fixed then i started having the ESC serv ice light come on, and the trac symbol comes up and the engine light flashes. and the power is reduced and it jerks when driving

its possible that the incorrect voltage regulator was fitted to the alternator during the repair. A low voltage or irregular voltage from the alternator can cause havoc with vehicle electronics

What causes the "Reduced Engine Power", "Service Stability Control" and "Traction Control" warning lights to come on?

the "Reduced Engine Power", problem causes the PCM to disable "Service Stability Control" and "Traction Control" turning on the warning lights to come on for those systems . The reduced engine power is because of a problem with the electronic throttle control system or as GM calls it TAC system . Reduced Engine Power Mode
When the PCM detects a condition with the TAC system, the PCM may enter a reduced engine power mode. Reduced engine power may cause one or more of the following conditions:
• Acceleration limiting--The PCM will continue to use the accelerator pedal for throttle control, however, the vehicle acceleration is limited.
• Limited throttle mode--The PCM will continue to use the accelerator pedal for throttle control, however, the maximum throttle opening is limited.
• Throttle default mode--The PCM will turn OFF the throttle actuator motor and the throttle will return to the spring loaded default position.
• Forced idle mode--The PCM will perform the following actions:
- Limit engine speed to idle by positioning the TP, or by controlling the fuel and spark if the throttle is turned OFF.
- Ignore the accelerator pedal input.
• Engine shutdown mode--The PCM will disable fuel and de-energize the throttle actuator.

Ecs light on 2011 HHR LS and low power

ECS is electronic controlled stability. It works with traction control when it is slippery and it does cause what you describe. It reduces the power to the engine and drive train. IT could be from ice build up on wheel sensors.

I have a 2008 Saturn outlook sometimes it will say traction control off and then says reduced engine power and it will viberate. You can shut it off and let it sit for a few minutes and start it back up...

What garage was it at ? Dealer reduced engine power means there is a problem with the electronic throttle control .this will shut off traction control off . Were there any DTC'S - diagnostic trouble codes read from the PCM - engine computer .

Reduced power is a problem with electronic throttle contol . drive by wire . Do you know what this is ? Taking the vehicle an having it hooked up to diagnostic tool an checking for DTC'S - diagnostic trouble codes is always a first step when trying to find the root cause of any trouble light ! And not auto zone , pep boys , or advance auto parts . Thier diagnostic tool will not check codes in all system control modules .

Hi accannaday,
Thank you for requesting me to help you with your problem.

The lights you described are warning lamps that are telling you that there is a malfunction in one or more of the HUNDREDS of systems and electrical circuits in your vehicle. Nobody can help you with this problem (including myself) until you have your computer network in your vehicle scanned for Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). Without these codes nobody can do any more than "GUESS" what the problem is. On the other hand, although I cannot tell you for certain what the problem is, I can explain some things to you and make a pretty good "educated guess".

Your check engine light is telling you that there is a fault in your engine control system and the Trac Off light is telling you that there is a problem with your Antilock Brake/Traction Control system. Certain faults can cause engine damage or destroy your catalytic converters (high-dollar if you have to relace them). The reduced power indicator is telling you that the engine control module has gone into reduced power mode to protect your engine and catalytic converters from damage. If ANY of these lights are on while you are driving the vehicle there will be DTCs set. (I know you said that you tried to pull up codes and didn't get any...please read on...)

First, please note that what I said above is "computer NETWORK". There are several different computers or "modules" in your vehicle. They are all connected together and share data with each other. They actually share data from several sensors and inputs, but we are going to talk about your wheel speed sensor data for a minute.

The ABS/Traction Control system uses data from the wheel speed sensors to determine when a wheel is slipping or locking-up on slick roads. The ABS will use this data to relieve the brake pressure on the slipping wheel to get it rotating again for better control and stopping ability. At the same time, if the slipping is severe, the traction control activates and sends data to the engine control computer. The engine control computer can shut the fuel and ignition off to reduce the torque on the drive wheels in an effort to regain control. When this occurs under normal conditions with a slipping wheel, the TRAC light will illuminate for a few seconds and go back off when control has been achieved.

Here's the problem:
If the wheel speed sensor fails or is producing an erratic signal to the ABS module, it can actually cause continuous cylinder misfire due to the engine computer turning the injectors and ignition coils on and off and on and of get the picture.... Anyway, this type of operation can produce engine damage and wreck your converters....This is where the reduced power mode comes in.

When in reduced power mode, the engine will supply only a pre-determined amount of fuel and will limit the accelerator from working and will only allow the vehicle to be driven up to a set maximum speed. It takes "manual control" of the system so that you can still drive the vehicle to get it repaired. (You might want to take the back0roads when this happens because it will not accelerate very well and it is a good way to get run over.)

I hope I haven't bored you too much with the details. I told you all of that so you can understand this:

Your wheel speed sensors on your vehicle are built into the wheel bearing and hub assembly. I think you may have damaged your wheel bearing and/or wheel speed sensor when you bent your wheel.

This can be verified by scanning your computer system. Please note that if you are using a generic OBD2 code reader, you will NOT be able to access these codes. Generic OBD is only for emissions-related engine and transmission control faults. Where you are most likely to find the codes that will be needed to properly diagnose and repair your Pontiac will be located in the ABS/Traction Control module.

You will need a scan tool that has the ability to scan your entire network and display live data streams to verify the actual cause of the problem as well as to reset the memory in all of the affected modules after repairs are made.
