Top 20 KitchenAid KSM90 Ultra Power Series Stand Mixer - Page 5 Questions & Answers

Pry the chrome drip ring off. You will find it is filled with oil. Clean it thoroughly, then tighten the screws which were uncovered when you removed the chrome "drip ring". It should stop leaking. If it leaks a little bit then the drip ring will catch the oil so it doesn't get into your dough or whatever you are mixing. It should last a few more years then you will probably have to repeat the procedure. They call it a drip ring for a reason, I guess kitchenaid knows they will leak sometime in the life of the machine so they put it on the mixer!!

The motor is probably burnt out. You will need to either replace the motor or buy a new mixer.

That's why I buy $15.00 hand-helds.

I know someone that somehow fitted a hand-held mixer onto their old mixing stand. It's wworth a try when you consider shopping.

Hi and welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly.
The Head Lock is most likely worn. The 4.2 mb Service m\Manual is located here:

You may have a worn hinge pin: Figure 7 page 7 of the pdf file.
The spring for the head lock can be also broken. Item 20 this link:

See page 22, figure 72 in section 5 of the service manual for pedestal hinge repairs. Most likely the set screw for the head lock has come loose.

Your parts can be found here: (with some exceptions like item 20 above)

This information should get you going if your able to read the manual and follow the sometimes vague instructions.

Thanks for choosing FixYa,

This will happen. don't worry about it, these mixers are designed to be under load so just relax and don't worry about it. It will happen under heavy loads mainly, but sometimes heavy cake batters as well. Hope this helps, Sincerely, Luke :)

Hello Nscully,

Inorder to seperate the stand and the head you should only have to take the keeper pin out of the top end of the stand. It will require some force to get them seperated.

I would suggest that you replace the oil, but first find out the reason for the leak. There must be a cover on a gearbox that can be removed to put oil in as I doubt that there will be and actual filler point on the machine.

I believe the brushes and the spring are one piece, so the brush should come out with the spring. Either the brushes are so worn that you just aren't noticing the little bit that's left, or the block has come loose from the spring. You can tip the machine over so the brush hole is facing down and let gravity do the work. If there's any brush left inside, it should slide out. Otherwise just install the new brushes.

On the tilt head models there is a "Stop screw" that adjusts how far down the head goes. I just can't remember if it's in the head or base. I use the other model that lifts the bowl.

it should be high temperature grease. it will only drip out if the seal has dried out or cracked.i think the seal has a spring inside it may need changing they should be cheap.and easy to change. or you could always put some flour in the bowl and run it for a few minutes to see if it dries up it may just be lack of use.

If you're still having this problem, here's what I did a few minutes ago that fixed it. Lift the head, then turn the screw that connects the head to the base to the left. You're basically unscrewing it. That screw regulates how high or low the beater is. Unscrew it a little at a time, and lower the head and try to lock after each turn. The head will gradually get in a more locked position. Keep turning the screw till the head finally locks in all the way. Read the "beater to bowl clearance" section in the manual.

You can try moving the lever slightly up or down while moving it forward to see if this will free it it or make a difference. Otherwise, the spring inside may have snapped or the speedlink cam may have came loose or broke. Either one will require the top end assembly to be removed to replace these parts.

Your mixer is leaking grease not oil. It is a simple fix. First you have to open the machine and regrease it. Once you have done that try replacing the gasket. Also, this particular mixer cannot be left on its side (some people store it sideways in a cabinet or under the sink) doing so will cause the machine to leak as well.

The speed on your KSM90 is controlled by three pieces: a Governor Assembly (35), a Control Plate Assembly (36), and a Phase Board Control (39/40 depending on the voltage of your machine). You just need to determine which one of those parts is bad and replace it. I have attached a schematic to this post so you can easily see where these parts are located within the machine. Once you locate the bad part you can either bring it to an authorized repair center (or you can bring it to them to fix it before you open it up) or you can purchase the items direct from us and we will be more than happy to send them to you.

I am sorry to hear you are having problems with your mixer.

The first place I would start is to look at your Motor Brushes, they may have been placed in incorrectly or have worn down too much. I have added a link below for our help video on checking and replacing the motor brushes:

I hope this helps you :)

If you remove the meat grinder, does the mixer still work? It could be that the meat grinder is jammed.

You might have also blown a breaker. Have you tried plugging a lamp or something else into the outlet to make sure it's still working?

It sounds to me like the armature cracked. I had never heard of this until a few years ago and my milwaukee 1/2 driil did the same thing you are describing. I took it to a friend whom I trust and he showed me where it had split and a small piece had split off and wedged between armature and frame. I hope this is of some help to you. Thank you.

There could be one of two things wrong (or both). You might need a new seal or you might just need the machine to be regressed. Also, never keep your mixer stored on its side as this will automatically allow the machine to leak grease.
