my parents have a ge refridgerator tfx27e that is not cooling as of this morning. we had repair place out and they said the compressor is bad. per his words, he tested it and said electric is going to the compressor, but when it tries to turn on, something inside is stopping it so it won't run, needs new compressor.

the issue is, this is in a custom kitchen and the fridge has wood paneling on the front and matches everything nicely. i'm afraid a new fridge will never work with the panels made for this one?

it it worth fixing? i'm also pretty handy, but the repair guy said it's a 5 hour job. advice?

Good day,
The best way to isolate the problem, is go step by step. The following will get you there.
P.S. Ice makers left on extended periods without water connected can ruin the ice maker. The reason, is there is a calrod heater molded to the bottom of the ice maker to loosen the cubes.
With no water, it will cycle these heaters every 10 minutes or so eventually burning out the heater, which is non-replaceable.

First step is to take a small paper cup of water and fill the cavity until it is near full. With the ice maker turned on, close freezer door and wait 3 hours to see if it harvests. If not, the ice maker is bad, and must be replaced. If the cubes harvest then.......
Three possibilities.
1. The water supply from the house is not delivering water to the water valve. Shut off the house at the meter, disconnect the line going to the water valve, and with the line pointed into a bucket, have someone turn the valve back on for a 15 second count. The water should come out smartly. If not, the line and it's fittings will have to be replaced.
2. The fill tube from the back of the machine that feeds water into the back of the ice maker is frozen up. You will have to remove the ice maker to visually inspect that tube. If blocked, it needs to be defrosted, but use caution. Too much heat too fast will start to melt plastic and vinyl parts you don't want melted.
If this is the case, then once cleaned out, you will have to change the water valve located in the back bottom rear of the machine because it is leaking during the off cycle.
3. If everything checks O.K. up to this point, you will have to purchase and install a new water valve, and install it.
P.S. Under very rare occasions the electric circuity in the ice maker will fail to send a signal to the water valve. Although rare, it can happen, in which case the best option is to replace the ice maker and water valve.

GE profile range F9 error code

In the cleaning cycle it ran for 1 hour of a 3 hour cycle and then constantly beeped with an f 9 error code. After I could open the oven again I reset the oven by turning off the circuit breaker for 30 sec. and then I tried to clean the oven again and the same thing happened. What is wrong with this and how can I fix it.

F9 indicates a problem with the wiring specifically listed as program w/ door circuitry. A qualified service tech may be the best choice to fix this problem.

Leaking icemaker

Ice maker leaks water instead of filling tray where ice cubes form. Cannot see where leak is occurring. I can get ice cubes if I move bar to "ON" position and check freezer often, then return bar to "OFF" position before leaking starts. Freezer has wound up with huge icicles down the side three times in the last few months. My husband won't leave it off cause he wants ice cubes!  He thinks some kind of seal might be worn. I still use the chilled water dispenser every day with no problems.  (The fridge is 9 or 10 years old.)  Any ideas?

You may want to check that your water line isn't cracked.

Ours cracked and now we need to replace our floor. The water line is too close to the compressor which heats the plastic tubing and makes it brittle. Our refrigerator is 9 years old. Model #TPX24BRYFBB

Good luck

GE Refrigerator Interior Light stopped Working!

Hello! We have a GE Freezer-Top Refrigerator GTR11AAPARWW. Recently the Interior Light stopped working. We tried replacing the bulb but still no go. In the manuals troubleshooting section for this refrigerator it says, "Replace Fuse or Reset the Breaker" if changing the bulb doesn't work. Does anyone know how to do this? I'm at my wits end.

If you changed the light bulb but the problem persists and the rest of the unit is working fine then the door light switch has probably failed. Item 13 this link: http://www.appliancepartspros.com/partsearch/model.aspx?model_id=5131917&diagram_id=24986225#d24986225

detailed view: http://www.appliancepartspros.com/part_details.aspx?part_id=3193221&image=2

This will be located in the fold hinge area of the door.

Note the 2 tabs on the sides that must be depressed with either a putty knife or a kinfe blade to remove it from the chassis. Then it is a matter of disconnecting the 2 terminals. You can test this with a meter using resistance by pulling off one wire and depressing the plunger. Static hands off the plunger you will read continuity. Plunger depressed it will read open. If your switch does NOT read like that then it has failed.

Additionally.... there is the possibility that ice build up in the back of your light socket has disconnected one or the terminals of the socket. The light socket is removable from the front. Most of the light sockets rotate 90 degrees (CAREFULLY with bulb removed) and then can be removed. Check the terminals of the socket to make sure they are attached.

As far as replacing fuse.. or resetting the breaker they are talking about the house main power panel. If everything but the light works the Fuse or Circuit Breaker is NOT your "no light" problem.

Thanks for using FixYa.

Ice maker Diagnostic Test:

- Remove the ice bucket
-Turn the ice maker off, wait 15 seconds than turn it back on
-Press the ice paddle three times, this will begin diagnostic test.
-PLEASE DO NOT TOUCH ICE MAKER DURING DIAGNOSTICS

-In 3 minutes you should see the rack inside turn 360 degrees
-AND the ice maker bowl should fill with water

-IF either DID NOT work, call 1-800-GE-CARES for ice maker replacement. A service call is approx $80. The $80 will be deducted from the part/labor if you choose to purchase/install parts from the service technician. If not, you will pay for the service call. Good luck.

Water won't flow from GE Smart Water under-sink RO water filter

GXRM10GBL02 model - Changed all three filters. Reserve tank doesn't seen to fill. After many hours, flow only lasts about 20 seconds. I can hear the trickle of water into the drain from the RO filter.

Did I switch tubing lines when I replaced the Flow Control and screen in the 1/4" tubing from the RO cartridge?

Was I supposed to bleed off air somewhere?

Disconnect the water pressure tank making sure the end the line hooks up to is open. The tank should be relatively light, and if you shake it you should not hear any water. If you hear water in it, or it feels heavy, that means the bladder inside the tank has failed. Replace the tank with a new one, and set the pressure on the bicycle type valve at 8 PSI before you connect the tank up to the water line.
