I don't have repair for defective timer.
If following information does not apply to your timer, then add a comment with clear description of timer for possible help.

1) The only complaint about this 6-button timer sold by Woods, GE and Westek is the MODE doesn't work.
The key to this timer is to finish programming, and then press Clock to return to current time, and at this point the timer is in correct mode.
Then do NOT press mode button ever for any reason, except to reset timer.

2) Try resetting timer by pressing Clock Mode and Prog buttons at same time, and then re-program timer.

3) Timer is not heavy-duty. Load rating is 1000watts incandescent, and 1/4 HP.
If load rating is greater, then timer will not operate as expected.

4) If you have problem with timers, try timer on different load and on different outlet.
Test outlet for polarity using circuit analyzer.

1) I test timers. Some arrive defective.
People write to fixya reporting glitches and problems with this timer.
However, fixya might show complaints because timer is popular. After all, if nobody bought certain brand car, there would be few complaints.
2) This timer resets after power outage, so if you have loose wire, then timer will reset.
3) Timer problems are also associated with interference, noise, or bad wiring. Buy cheap circuit analyzer at home center and test by plugging into outlet.

4) Try timer on different circuit, for example indoor circuit, and plug in different load.
5) Above information should narrow down if timer is defective, or if wiring or load are causing problem. Return defective timer to Home Depot, Lowes or Target and buy another.

If you have different timer, hints below might apply.

1) I test timers, and some arrive defective, and some go bad within a year, but most last a few years.
2) To reset timer, unplug for several minutes, plug back in, and then re-program.
3) Move timer to plug on different circuit breaker and see if same problem occurs.
4) If you have another kind of timer in the house, move it to same plug as problem-timer and see if different timer also looses time.
5) Use circuit analyzer to check if circuit has problem. Circuit problems will affect timer electronics.
6) If timer is clean and new-looking: buy another one from Lowes or Home Depot or Target and then return defective one in new package.

I test timers. Timers arrive defective, and timer go bad.
Instructions usually say to reset timer.
Many of the digital plug-in timers have rechargeable battery that wears out, and then programs stop working.

Add a comment with description of timer, and I'll check files to see what the manual says, and what other fixya customers have complained about.

Lets run through trouble spots others have with programmable timers:
Add a comment any time and I will help.

What we know for sure:
-Battery is working because display shows.
-Manual override works, so basic electricity is OK and light is OK

-Common programming problems:
-You set current time and it shows in display > if current time is not set or does not advance with passing time, then timer does not know when to turn on-and-off. Double check display for current day, hour, and minute.

-Each event has ON time and OFF time. So you set event1 ON and then set event1 OFF. For example some people set ON time and don't realize each ON needs corresponding OFF, or can't find how to set OFF. Trick is making sure timer display matches fig3 and fig4 shown in manual. Press PROG button until display shows 1ON for event1 ON and then press PROG button until display shows 1OFF for event1 OFF.
-To review programs and double-check, press PROG button repeatedly to scroll through programming. Check for ON and OFF days, and for overlapping on-off commands.
-Event1 ON and event1 OFF should be set for same day(s). For example event1 ON is set for Tuesday but event1 OFF is set for All-days (instead of Tuesday) will conflict and timer will not function.
-Conflicts in programming will cause problems. Conflict example: Event1 says ON 7pm OFF 9pm Tues, but event2 says opposite.
-Make schedule of on-off times before programming to avoid conflicts.

Setting Mode:
MODE is manual override button: press it to set Automatic, ON-OFF override, or Random
Press MODE button until RDN displays in upper left corner, and then press MODE one more time to enter AUTOMATIC >>> you want automatic for programming functions.

Circuit analyzer: If above items check out 100%, and timer still doesn't work, plug timer to indoor plug on another circuit (not on outdoor plug). This will check if outdoor plug has electrical problem interfering with electronics inside timer. Buy cheap plug-in circuit analyzer from Home Depot electric department and double-check circuits.

The battery operates the timer.
If power goes out, the timer still functions as long as the battery is working.
To test, unplug the timer.
