Use a USB 3 cable it will provide more usb throughput

Many will not. The beeping is not coming from the external drive, it is coming from your computer's system beeper. Usually those beeps are in a pattern that is a code for what the problem is. Check your computer manual booklet.

The fault sounds like a power supply problem. The USB port on your computer supplies up to a max. 500MA and this may not be sufficient for the external hard drive to work properly.
I suggest you get a new AC power adapter for this drive.

you could run the chkdsk utility

click start control panel administrive tools computer management disk management right click on your drive select properties click tools you should see click check now click start two boxes automatically fix files and scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors place then a tick in both boxes then select check now start or you might tick one box then return after its finished the first repair then return and tick the second box you should not do anything while the chkdsk utility is in progress any input may damage this drive

Install any drivers that may have come with the hard drive.

However it should work as most hard drives are removable devices and are therefore plug and play.

Be sure to update your Windows operating system to Service pack 3.

Try it in a friends computer/laptop.

You need to listen to and wirte down how many beeps and in what order, ie, short beep, long beep, 2 short and a long, etc., and refer to your manual if you have one common beep code errors wind up being problems with ram but, could be something more serious. Complete make and model number would be helpful in looking into the specs on your system. It would be helpful to find out what version of Bios you have.

Hi,
it could either be a faulty hard drive, or an usb problem. If your external drive is provided with an extra usb cable for corrent supply, try to use it, otherwise try to connect the usb cable directly behind your PC without any hub or stuff like that. If you are techincally competent, you could use a voltmeter to directly check the corrent provided by your workstation and verify if that is enough for your hard drive to work.

Beeping sound means physical damage. Often there is no way to recover data.

This can happen when you place a drive in multiple computers with windows. Also this can happen if the system used the drive to extract system folders.

right clickt he items and then click security. click advanced and you can go to the owner tab. under that there is a way to take ownership for the selected items and all subitems.

It's possible to not recogize the HDD, capacity being too high. Try to reinstall the driver, or try to put it in another USB 2.0 port.
