If the model number indicated here is correct that set uses 3 picture tubes.

No bulb used on that model.

If model number is correct let me know and I have a few suggestions.

The Hitachi 61SDX01B only has an NTSC tuner (analog). You will need a set-top box to watch digital (ATSC (OTA) or QAM (unencrypted digital cable) signals. For OTA signals, the digital-to-analog converter boxes that were sold with the government coupon were limited to SD output. HD converter boxes are available but cost more.

I wish that I had better news for you.

Projection TV sets have two very common problems. One is convergence ( 3D/Warped video) the other is CRT fluid ( Dull Video). Here are more details and solutions for both. Repair kits with instructions are also avail from www.TvRepairKits.com

Common Problem #1) Convergence has gone out

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some pics of convergence problems.

Common Problem #2) CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Dust it first with a dry microfiber cloth, then using the smallest amount of water, go in the direction of the screen grain. Go slowly and dry with paper towels.

Hi Tim,

If the symptom didn't cure by convergence adjustment through the remote control, the problem is in the convergence board inside. The common parts fault is the convergence IC and some of the resistor once isolated and replace with new one, your unit will back to normal again. If you don't have necessary tools and test instrument and can't do the job yourself, I would advice you to look for a technician to fix the problem.

Hope I helped you.

Have a nice day!

Thanks for using Fixya.

Hi mmoir333,
If the symptom can't be fix by convergence set-up from the tv through your remote control then the trouble is internal and it is caused by bad convergence board. The most commonly faulty parts in this board is the convergence chip/IC. Once replace by IC/Chip your unit will back to normal again. Also you have to check for open fuse/fusible resistor in line with its power supply. Bad solder joints will do the same problem, I would advice you to re-solder first on that board and spot some cold solder.

If you don't have necessary tools and test instruments, and can't do the job yourself, I would advice you to look for a professional to troubleshoot the problem. Don't attempt to work internal if you don't know the safety precaution of handling it, there some stored electricity enough to hurt you with a little mistake only.

Hope I helped you.

Have a nice day!

Thanks for using Fixya.

Tries websites like Amazon.com,Ebay.com to buy a pack of clothes call the Miro Fibers clothes.Use these Micro Fibers clothes, with some water clean the picture screen panel. These clothes are not adbrasive,it for used to clean like eye glasses and exspensive camera lens and for shinning and buffering expensive jewleries.

Unplug the set from power.

Best way to do this is with back cover removed look for the three large black lens--they are the light source for your picture. This is a 10 minute job---do not touch anything else inside even if set is unplugged.

Clean with either a lens cloth or a paper towel with glass cleaner sprayed on it, This should be done once a year---if moderate or heavy dust, picture will be darker and duller looking.

The set has a mirror but that is more difficult to get at and it hangs at a angle so dust does not get on it.

Let me know if you have questions and if this information told you something you did not know, rate this solution as very helpful as I do this here for free.

Using a lint free cloth, such as a diaper, and windex (no ammonia), spray the cloth to dampen it and using a swirling motion wipe the screen. Finish with a dry lint free cloth. Never use paper towels, and never spray the screen as the liquid can migrate between the different sections of the screen. Let me know if you need more help.

If you try to adjust convergence with the flash focus, perfect focus, (depending on the make of your set) or by manual convergence and the lines will not line up or even move. Your symptom sounds like a damaged convergence IC.

If you want to repair this set yourself, I have some instructions below that will be a help to you.
While it is not a very hard repair, this repair can be a bit tricky. If you have a 45W soldering iron, solder, solder wick, heat sink compound, and some basic soldering skills, you can repair the television yourself.
*** VERY IMPORTANT NOTE***
If your set is not producing a clear picture and the colors are not lining up, do not continue to watch the set as this can lead to further failure and possibly damage the individual CRT’s in the set.
I have repaired hundreds of these sets, so if you have any questions after reading the following, please reply to this post and I will help you in any way that I can.

With that aside I have some support suggestions that I have put together that may help you make an informed decision.

You should be able to get a local service center to repair this at your house for between $350.00 - $450.00, If you want to repair this set yourself, I have some instructions below that will be a help to you.
While it is not a very hard repair, this repair can be a bit tricky

How do I tell if the IC’s are damaged?
Since you cannot look inside of an IC, you will have to locate some of the components in the area around the convergence IC’s. You may be able to see some resistors that have changed colors or you test a resistor and it no longer reads the value marked by the color bands or the printed value. You will have to replace the IC’s and the supporting components.

When you remove the old IC's, please be sure to remove all of the old heat sink compound, as it can act as an insulator for the new IC's and cause them to overheat. I usually clean the heat sinks with alcohol and a small rag.

Where are the IC’s located and how do I find them?
There are two and large IC’s that control the convergence in a big screen set. Some of the newer sets only have one. If you only have one, it is right in the middle of the set on the center circuit board. They are secured to a very large aluminum heat sink. They will have a part number stamped on them that will start with an STKXXX-XXX, like STK392-110.

Along with the convergence IC’s there will also be some associated components that will need to be replaced as well. There are some resistors that are part of the convergence circuit that will be open and need to be replaced. Most likely these will appear charred in the center. If you have an Ohm Meter or a DVM, check all the resistors that are close to the IC’s and you should be looking for either ones that have opened or have changed values.

If one of the convergence IC’s are found to be bad, I would replace them both, if one has gone bad the other may go soon. I usually order my parts from Andrews Electronics in California, they will have the OEM components that you will need.
Their site is
http://www.andrewselectronics.com/welcome.aspx
And their phone number is a 24-Hour Order Desk: (800) 274-4666
I recommend the phone order so you can talk to the person about the different types of IC’s that are available.

I would also advise that the convergence IC’s be OEM or better, just because they are cheap does not mean that they are a good deal. I have seen the cheap IC’s fail after a short time, even though they look exactly like the OEM IC’s. I think that the bottom line is that you will get what you pay for when it comes to the parts.

You can also try
http://www.tvrepairkits.com/ , they do carry OEM or better parts. When you order from them you will get a kit with instructions on how to do the repair, step-by-step.

I hope this information allows you to resolve this issue.
I am doing this for free.
If I have helped you, please help me, and rate this suggestion the highest FixYa rating. (Two Thumbs Up)
Please Note: If you cannot rate this post with the highest rating, then please do not leave any rating. I am doing this for free and I do not think that any rating other that the best is needed.
If you need further assistance please comment to this post and I will try to help you further.
