If coming up on screen when magic focus is used it is a convergence issue where the magic focus is not working. If that you can ignore it as set has another better way to adjust convergence in the "Decam" mode.

if your talking about the sets convergence does not line up and it looks like a 3-D picture than The best advice I can tell you at this point is to go to tvrepairkits.com and order the complete convergence kit for your model of TV set, no need to search and order multiple parts from different sources and pay multiple shipping fees! Go to http://www.tvrepairkits.com/xcart/home.php?partner=larry
The kit comes with original Sanyo STK IC'S , not those cheap aftermarket or china made IC'S full pictorial directions, the thermal paste, resistors, the correct Pico fuses, AND free live on-Line tech assistance in case you run into a problem with the repair. They ship out 2 to 3 day Priority mail, the next day in most cases GOOD LUCK!!!

You need to replace the STK ICs which are Convergence ICs STK392-110 use 120s or 150s
also check the small ohm resistors around ICs . They are Big Black ICs and will have part number on them ,should be located on the Right hand side of Chassis .
Mats Eletronics has Parts 1-800-628-1118 Convergence IC Kit.

Projection TV sets have two very common problems. One is convergence ( 3D/Warped video) the other is CRT fluid ( Dull Video). Here are more details and solutions for both. Repair kits with instructions are also avail from www.TvRepairKits.com

Common Problem #1) Convergence has gone out

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some pics of convergence problems.

Common Problem #2) CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

You have a bad convergence board. You will have to remove the convergence board. If I remember, this board also has the flyback transformer mounted on the same board. It is quite complicated to pull this board. You will need to use different colored permy markers to remember how to reconnect the cables and connectors. The ICs you will replace are the STK-392-110 and STK-392-150. You will resistors that are low ohms (under 10 ohms) at two watts. They may be 1.5, 1.8, 2.2, 2.2, 2.7,3.3,3.9, and 4.7 ohms. For a full detailed instructions and photos see the website,www.TvRepairKits.com. Be sure to have your model number handy and follow the instructions on this website. I have repaired many TVs using this site. Thanks for asking and show all hands of support!

It is the convergence units themselves in the TV that are failing, that is why they help slightly but can't fully correct the problem. This is major hardware failure for sure, and on this older unit of Hitachi a very common problem. It is repairable but cost prohibitive to do so. You may want to look into just replacing the unit. Let me know though if you really want to attempt the repair yourself.

Thanks
Tim
