By formatting you will have lost everything on your ipod either download iTunes reset your ipod Apple's iTunes serves its intended purpose but for some users the restraints from the Digital Rights Management (DRM) make iTunes a cumbersome application to use. Luckily, there are many alternatives to using your iPod without iTunes. The easiest ways is to use freeware that can easily be found on the Internet. Some of the applications that you can use to format your iPod are gtkpod, Amarok, Banshee, foobar2000.

After experimenting with these programs, foobar2000 was found to be the most user-friendly and the easiest to set up. It is a clean light weight program and does not eat up a lot of your computer's resources while running. The application, however, is designed to only run on the Windows platform.
Install foobar2000. You can download the latest copy from foobar2000.org. http://www.foobar2000.org/ Once you have installed foobar you need to configure the path to your music library. To do so, click the library tab and scroll down to configure. Next, click the "Add" button on the top right and navigate to your music folder. It may take several minutes for foobar to update your library information. Download the iPod Manager (See Below) and extract the compressed folder. http://yuo.be/ipod.php Please note, you may need a program like 7 zip to extract this file if your computer does not support it. Before beginning the next step, close foobar2000. Navigate to your computer's program files typically found by clicking on "My Computer" in the Start Menu and then clicking on the C drive. From the program file folder locate the foobar2000 folder and open it. Next, open the components folder. Now, drag and drop the foo_dop.dll file from the folder in step three to the components folder you just opened. Close all windows. Open foobar2000 and plug in your iPod. From foobar you can click on "File" at the top left and scroll down to iPod to access settings. You can also right click on individual songs or albums in the foobar menu and select add to iPod.

Check to see whether your iPod shuffle is the original stick version or the newer version, which plugs into the iPod dock connector.

Turn your PC on.

The PC needs to be on to transfer music and charge the iPod shuffle.

Place the iPod shuffle in the iPod dock connector if you have the newer version.

If you're using the original version, then plug it directly into a high-power USB port on your PC.

Check the monitor to ensure iTunes has loaded.

This means a connection was established.

hope this helps
