Linksys BEFSX41 Router (DHBEFSX41) - Answered Questions & Fixed issues

Yes you can use that router to connect to the internet using Windows 7. You really don't need to download and install drivers for the router unless there are specific settings that you wish to program and use. I connected mine without downloading or installing anything and it worked just fine.

All you have to do is plug in the router and connect your modem to it. Wait for it to warm up and all of the lights to come on and go steady (except the wireless & internet connection lights) then connect your pc to it via ethernet cable (with the pc turned off). Then start your pc and it should automatically recognize the connection.

Good luck!

I would set it up in 'router' mode. Bridge mode is for a specific application for an intranet (not internet).
Bridge Mode Router Mode Does not block any broadcast or multicast Blocks and provide protection against broadcast storms Transparent bridge and can pass Non-IP protocols Only IP protocol is supported PPPOE protocol Pass-through No PPPOE protocol pass-through Able to transport VLAN tagging Doesn't supports VLAN No network segmentation. One broadcast domain Network segmentation (Clients can be on different IP subnet) Can only relay the DHCP client's request to the external DHCP server Can Act as DHCP server & relay which Prevents IP conflict & DHCP Injection Bridges maintains bridging table (Mac) & STP can be used to avoid loops No STP feature; maintains routing table External bandwidth Controller can be used to control the speed of the clients by Mac or IP address External bandwidth Controller can be used to control the speed of the clients by IP only In client device, it uses MAC address to associate which requires WDS compatible AP Use SSID to associate, work with any 802.11a/b/g AP

1. try typing the user/ password into a word pad or to see if you have caps lock on
2. just try typing "admin and leave the password blank and hit enter.
3. If you are still unable to enter properly then reset the router to default and establish
new user information for the router.

So your saying, you have a cable router (modem), then you went from the cable router to a router then the PC.

If you have cable, you only use a cable router, there is no need to have a regular router after your cable modem.

If you are using the added router just for a firewall, don't, waste of time.

Just make sure that windows firewall is on and checked no incoming
connections, unless you have to for certain programs.

If you really want to stay safe, get zonealarm firewall, this will also keep software from calling home.

If you think your not safe, then do a port scan on your ip address.

Reboot the router so that it can get a new dhcp lease.

If you can't login to the router to reboot it, just unplug the power for about a minute, then plug it back in.

If that doesn't work you will need to be able to login to the router to fix it. Depending on your internet supplier, you may have to set the router to login to the router.

Good Luck!

What VNC product are you using? RealVNC? TightVNC? UltraVNC? The VNC software you installed will have a port# assigned to it by default (probably 5900) which can be configured. Find out what that is and forward that port# to the IP of your VNC "server." That should do it.

(don't fogot about any software firewalls on the VNC "server" machine)

Access your router's interface by visiting the URL http://192.168.1.1 and when prompted for login credentials, use these defaults:

user name = admin
password = <leave blank>

unless otherwise you have changed it.

While at the router's page, click the OPTION to DISABLE DHCP.

When DHCP is disabled, you should manually assign IP addresses to connecting PCs to connect to your hub.

1. press the reset button on the back of the router for 20sec..while pressing the reset button, unplug the power plug and after 2secs while pressing the reset button plug it back in and press for 30secs after that unplug the router for 15secs then plug it back in..once all the lights are solid and ok
2. connect the ethernet cable to port1 of the router and the other end to the lan port of your computer..
3. pull up ur browser then type at the url:192.168.1.1.or 192.168.0.1 or u can check the routers default gateway by right clicking the network icon on the lower right of your task bar and click on status and it will show the ip address of the computer, subnetmask and default gateway, the default gateway is the routers ip address, once u type in to the url, it will ask u the username and password, by default the username is admin and the password is 1234 or just leave it blank
4. it will show the setup page of the router. u can set the router on the specific internet setup that u have.
a. if ur isp is a cable company, normaly u need to do a mac clone on the router setup page by cloning the computer that is reg to the cable company, how to determine it. ex. the computer that is reg to the cable company is a desktop or laptop, if this computer is connected to the modem directly and u can access internet.
b. once u determined it u need to connect this computer directly to the router and do a mac clone and set ur internet settings to auto-dhcp..then save the settings and after that, unplug to the power of the modem and router, plug in 1st the power of the modem then once all lights lit, plug in the router, then once all lights lit, try to pull up a browser that ur computer is connected directly to the router.. ur cable connection shud be, cable from the modem will go to the WAN port of the router and connect ethernet cable on port1 going to the lan port of the computer..once u can access the internet, u can now access again the setup page of the router by typing at the url:192.168.1.1 and u can setup the wireless settings, u need to create a ssid or wireless name and a security..
5. If ur isp is a dsl normaly they give u a username and password to connect to the internet, ur settings on the router should be PPPoe
6. If ur isp gives u a static ip address settings, u need to set the router to isp setup.
a. how to check the isp of the isp given to u..
1. click on start
2. run
3. type cmd
4. it will show a dos prompt
5. from the dos prompt type ipconfig/all
6. it will list the ip address, subnet, default gateway, dns server
this settings should be type in to the settings on the router for static ip addressing..
7. Once your done on the internet setting, go to your wireless connection settings and you can create a wireless network name or ssid, set a security by selecting wep, wpa, wpa2.
8. once all is set. save the settings and to check if your laptop can access the wireless network that you did, turn on the wireless switch of your laptop, once its on, it will show the wireless network icon on the lower right of the taskbar, right click it and select on view available network, the network name that u did should list, just select it and connect and it will ask for the password, just type the password and connect, you should be connected to the wireless network and have internet access..
9. If you are going to hook up your desktop to the wireless connection, you need to install a wireless network adapter, install the driver and do the same thing as u did to the laptop, for the desktop no need of turning on the wireless switch, once you install the driver correctly, it will show a network icon..
if you have any query pls feel free to get in touch.. good luck

Put in your model #, and if it is still available, there should be a link for that version. If so, download and install. You may have to uninstall first.

what part of the router configuration menu. Have you gone into your router. the generic address is 192.168.1.1. Once you go in there with that address and type in admin for both the user name and password you can access your router and make any changes to it that you need to. But there is a lot of stuff in there. What exactly are you trying to do with the router and what kind of router is it. I mean what brand name and model# and what do you want it to do?

so you said that only one is able to go online at a time .
that means the rotuer is not working properly or the connections are not done properly.
Who is your internet service provider ?
make sure that the modem is connected to the internet port on the router and the computer will be on port 1,2,3,4 ( any one of them).
If the connections are proper and you are able to go online on only 1 computer at a time then check the IP address on the working computer.
You should get the private IP address like 192.168.x.x. X ( might be any number).
If you get public IP address then the router is not working now.
You can not even upgrade the firmware of the router. Because the router is now working as a switch.

This is a complicated issue. Microsoft went to the Supreme Courts over compatibility issues associated with this. (Microsoft will not recognize anything other than Microsoft computers) and lost. Hence the big split of the company. It fell into the anti-trust laws. My immediate suggestion if you must keep your main server PC as linux would be to look into Wine. It is a program that emulates Windows in a Linux environment and from there try and see if you can get 3rd party programs to run under Wine. This is still very much under development, but it is your best choice. Extensive server knowledge (which I lack) could give you a very clean answer, but this is all I have to suggest for a direction to go in. Remember, Wine (though well developed and a continued endeavor) is VERY resource intensive. It will bog down a computer very quickly. So even if you can make it work, it make produce a large source of lag.

Also, take caution. My advice comes with a LOT of forum reading as most things done in Linux are VERY hardware specific. With any luck you will find a setup similar to your own and a step by step instruction on how to correct the issue.
