OCR software is usually a third-party program. Sometimes it is available on the original driver CD but it isn't included in the downloaded driver software. In the case of the CanoScan 4200F, the CD included the OmniPage SE OCR program. The SE indicates a Special Edition only bundled with the scanner and was only available for the OS versions that had been released when the scanner was first available. If you have the original CD (for Win98-XP), try to install the program using the Custom install option. (Check your current OS version. A 32-bit OS is more likely to support the OmniPage SE. With Windows Vista and 7, click Start > Control Panel > System and Security > System to determine the version. x64 indicates a 64-bit OS. ) If your current computer doesn't have an optical drive, use an external optical drive to install the program.
If you do not have the CD or your OS is incompatible with the Omnipage version on the CD, you will need to either purchase OmnuPage ($99 with a rebate from many vendors), AbbySoft's OCR program or one of the other OCR programs. SimpleOCR is free for personal use, http://www.simpleocr.com/Info.asp
. The biggest problem with the free OCR programs is that they do not handle documents with columns properly.
I wish that I had better news for you.
