On the back of the printer there should be a place to plug in at USB B cable. This is a square whole (check an image search for what USB B looks like). That cable then converts to a standard USB to plug into your computer.

This printer connects via USB cable and not thru a parallel printer cable. The USB connector is actually inside the machine. Here is a small image of where the connector is and a link to the quick start guide.

The following may work: remove all the ink supplies. Remove the printhead and soak it for about 5 minutes in 0.5" of very hot water. Gently blot the printhead on a soft damp paper towel to remove the excess water, then replace in the printer and then reinstall the ink supplies.

try removing the cartridges and make sure there is no obstruction blocking the circuitry and reinstall. also try shutting off the printer and wait 5 minutes then turn it back on to see if it resets itself. then try installing all new full ink cartridges and see what it does. if this all fails then take it to a repair shop for more detailed diagnostics.

Hello,

I have seen this before (on my mfc-440CN at home) and when onsite. Try removing the cartridge, and replacing it several times. Try pushing the cartridge down slowly as far as you can before the latch goes over it. perhaps a couple of sharp (not too hard as to break plastic parts) pushes to get the juice flowing. It may be that the mechanism on the printer is not going far enough into the cartridge to produce ink flow. Perhaps the cartridge is defective too. I would try removing the cartridge and reinstalling it over and over first. If id doesn't work right away, try it 20 or 30 more times. slow/fast/hard/soft....seriously.) Another option is to refill the old cartridge that was working and see what happens. This is probably cheaper than buying a new cartridge . If the old cartridge works after a refill then return the new cartridge as defective. If it doesn't work, maybe take the printer in to a shop for an estimate, or look at a new printer.

Yes your are right:
Stay away from older brother printers due to an developer mistake in the construction.

Better buy the latest modells with LC51 cartridges. Brother had learned their lesson, too and did a very good job with those new printers!!!

Give the old mfc3240 away to eBay for example.

You could clean the black ink cartridge. For this you need to remove the black ink cartridge which is present in the printer. In order to clean the laser or scanner block you could use a cotton swab as it would fully clean the dirt. You need to clean the grime and the dried ink present in the printer. This would remove all the hindrances which prevent the ink from flowing. Cleaning the printer heads would also help to solve the problem.get more help for printer not printing black .

You have to know the paper path of your printer (for any printer both laser and ink jet). Basically that's the path the paper takes from start to finish inside the machine. You'll have to check for any paper debris through the front and back. I would need some more information required to help further diagnosis this if you had paper jams in the past and last things done etc.

The "Unable to Clean" signals the fact that the printing head is completely clogged. In this printer the actual printing head is separated from the cartridges and uses an set of tubes to connect them; it can be removed separately for cleaning but that can be performed only at a service center - the printer must be dismantled partially to access the head assembly.
If you can't find a local repair shop then you should consider this fax machine dead - it will be cheaper to buy a new one than to fix it at a dealer.

This issues looking printer head problem. check the following Steps for cleaning printer head :

Click on the Start button if you have Windows XP. If you have Windows Vista, click the Windows icon that resides in the lower left corner of your computer screen.

Click on "Control Panel," then "Printers and Other Hardware." Finally click on "View Installed Printers or Fax Printers."

Right-click on the name of your printer and choose "Printing Preferences." This should open a new window; next look for a tab or button marked Maintenance, or something similar.

Find the button that says "Print heads" or "Clean the Print heads" and click on it. You may be asked to choose which print heads; choose them all if you are. Make sure there is paper and ink in your printer, and that it is turned on ahead of time.

Take out the page your printer has printed and see if there are any grids or boxes missing. If there aren't, then you can just exit the program--your print heads are not clogged. If there are grids missing, then click on the "Cleaning" or similarly worded button.

Once the cleaning process has completed, print another page to be sure that your print heads are no longer clogged. If they are still clogged, repeat Steps 1-5 until your printer is printing clearly.
