... Are you sure about the exact error message?

This link seems to have a related explanation for something that sounds kinda similar

If not, from http://www.brother-usa.com , you can find your printer's support page and then e-mail support. Nothing involving the word "initiate" appears in the user manual; I looked.

HI
You may have missed a VERY SMALL piece of paper some where. Check it again -use a flash light, magnifying glass BUT make sure there is no paper piece any where in the transportation route of the paper.Reset the machine-power off then on from the wall power outlet.
I did have this with a friend's machine and found a small piece in the side of the paper route.

Hi..
try to reset the machine.
disconnect the usb and power cable...and press and hold down the power button for 45 seconds and then reconnect all the cables and try again...
or try to clean the print heads...still does not work...could be an issue with print sensors..needs to be replaces.

Regards,
debroy

Which cart arent recognized? The yellow one or the cyan(blue) one or both?

Anyway:
Unplug machine from power. Wait three minutes. In this time take all carts out and close cover. reconnect machine to power. Machine demands carts. Open cover. Reinsert carts. Make sure that the support clip of the cart.holder is secured above the cart cover.

If you still have probs with one cart. the led contact on the circuit board is defectiv. You need a new cart holder then, which can be ordered as a spare part from a service partner near your home (see brother homepage).

I have the same error message “Check the Troubleshooting and Routine Maintenance Chapter in User's Guide" I called customer service for "BROTHER 1-800-284-4329 USA; 1-877-BROTHER for CANADA. The Tech’s and I performed a series of diagnostic test, via the phone but were unable to solve the problem... Brother seem to believe that I have a defected printer head, Brother referred me to a local authorize service agent for Brother. I do have my User's Guide and there is no additional information that I was able to use to resolve this problem. HOW EVER, I am able to get the machine to print by opening the cover and close it as if I had installed ink, or removed a paper jam “SIMPLY OPEN AND CLOSE THE COVER”. I also vacuumed and blew the insides and the outside buttons of the machine with forced air from my vacuum, after all that I still have the same problem. My solution...buy a new machine mine is 32 months old and I probably have ran 15k or more print, fax, and copy jobs.
Some times we need to know when to move on, TIME IS MONEY AND TIME WASTED IS UN-REFUNDABLE.
GOOD LUCK

I had the same problem. It corrected itself when I turned the printer power off and then back on after it went through it's shut down procedure.

If you have not performed the exact procedure described on page 12-15 in Chapter 12, Troubleshooting and routine maintenance, of the Users Manual, do so.

Heed the last paragraph of this page: If you clean the print head at least five times and the print has not improved, call Brother Customer Service (see Brother numbers on page i).

The printhead cant travel without prob in its rail. Try to pick up the paper which might stuck somewhere.

is it usb or does it have the old style lpt connector ?... if you don't have a printer output on your laptop it's time to shop for a usb capable printer.
