I need to download codecs
You have two options here. One is to download the divx or xvid packages which may try to install a few extra things. Or you can download a codec package such as the K-lite codec pack.
Divx or xvid are good but the last few versions install players and such that want to update all the time and I found were annoying. If you can disable that then divx or xvid are the two common ones that most people have. These have great compression and give a nice small but hi res file.
The K-lite codec pack includes a simple divx and xvid codec plus a few dozen other codecs. The download is maybe 35 mb for the basic pack and there are larger versions that include more. The benefit of this is that you would be able to play anything or use them to make a video. Get the media player classic. It plays things the normal windows one doesn't play. You can do a search for k-lite codec pack or try http://www.codecguide.com/ or http://www.free-codecs.com/download/K_Lite_Codec_Pack.htm
I've tried this both ways but found the k-lite setup to be less overhead on my computer. And less of a pain in the **** ;-]

NEED FINALIZING DVD
I had the same problem. What I did on my Hitachi DVDCam was to click the "Stop" button to clear all keystrokes. Then, click "Menu". The camera might say "Creating Thumbnails" for a minute but then it will stop and display a mock menu for your mini dvd. Then click "Menu" and the toolbar should pop up. With the arrow keys, scroll down. You should see a menu that says "Finalize DVD" click this. For a small dvd, it will take around 13 min. to finalize.

Can't read disc After FINALIZE
1.try to upload your videos to ULEAD movie maker and save it with any types of videos you like avi, divx, vcd, dvd etc.. or
2. if your disc is readable on your pc and its not playable then try to decode it by using xilisoft video converter. decode the files on your disc and after that burn it into a dvd or vcd. it should be playable now on your dvd player. hope that helps!

Finalizing
you usually can finalize in other brand camcorders-I've done it and it should work-I wouldn't think you need to finalize disc to stream from cam to pc-try it first w/out or see if only rw's will do it--r may not-some cams can only usb still photos so make sure your model supports video through usb

I have an Hitachi with mini dvds. They play back
First find the format of the video.
Insert the video cd to the computer and right click the video file and the click the properties menu, watch the file type(i.e: .flv , .avi ,.wmv)
Basically the hitachi saves in mpeg2 or mpeg4 type.
Use the GOM player to play the video Or there are many more players available to play that video.
