Sound travels at 1140 ft/sec or 347.472 meters/sec.
At a vocal frequency of say 347 Hz for a male this would have a full wavelength of 1m. To cancel a frequency would need a 180 degree phase shift, where negative air pressure cancels out positive pressure. In other words, it takes about 1/2000sec for sound to pass from mouth to mic directly, and guessing around 1/500 sec to reflect from book back to mic.
Add to this the fact that higher frequency consonants such as 'T' and 'S' sounds may range 8000 Hz to 10000 Hz which shortens the wavelength, it is very possible that some reflected sounds are cancelling the higher range, causing muddy sound.
Try experimenting by moving book away or re-positioning the PVR.
