The problem you are experiencing is due to a poor cooling system for the onboard graphics card. There is a gap of about 1 mm between the graphics card chip and the heatsink wich is normally filled with a heatpad. These do not conduct heat well enough to cool the chip properly so they overheat and corrupt the motherboard. It may be too late to save the motherboard you have at the moment but if you replace it the use a copper shim between the graphics card chip and the heatsink with heat sink compound. This should solve the overheating problem but is probably too late for your current motherboard.

If you were to log on to the manufacturer's web site, I think you will be pleasantly surprised as usually one is able to download if available, by model number, Customer Instruction Manuals, list of Dealers, for spare parts and service, Driver downloads and Installation Instructions as required.

This is the best way of ensuring up to date drivers for your system and they are free of charge!

I hope this helps.

unfortuantely this is usually the first sign that your graphics card is corrupt. it's a generic fault with V6000's. if you have the word compaq written on the back and not the Q symbol they use now then the chances are you need a new motherboard, especially if it's more than 2 years old. the reason you can't connect to the internet is that the graphics card also controls the wireless card and ethernet card so neither of them will work. sorry

Hook up a external monitor on the video output on the back of the laptop, if it works! the LCD on the computer is the problem, caused by a bad inverter board, or back light on the screen display. If both screens show black, the Video Graphics Card is the issue which part of the motherboard.

If your Compaq does not have the LAN drivers and you cannot connect to the Internet, then use a computer that has Internet access and download the drivers and then copy them to a USB memory stick. Then copy and install them on your Compaq.
You can download the drivers from the Compaq/HP WEBsupport/download page. Make sure you select your model laptop and the XP orVista Windows version of the drivers you require and install them. Click onthis link to download the drivers: -

I would first finish updating your laptop with all of the Windows XP Service pack updates. Here is also a link to all the drivers for your laptop. It looks like there is 3 possible sound card drivers.

Go to the last point in time you can remember before you made this change and use System Restore.

this symbol > means go to the next step or window.

Start Button>All Programs>Accressoies>System Tools> System Restore. Now that you're there click it, use common sense, and get to the point where you are able to pick a point back in time to reset you computer to.Then click on that, initiate SYstem Restore, and con't touch anything or get impatient until your computer goes through shutdown, reboot and you are back at your desktop.

All those changes you made will be gone.

Possible that some of the files are corrupt or removed off with a virus in the system. you will need to reinstall the OS if the restoration to an earlier date will not improve.
Now reinstall the sound card drivers which also could have lost with the virus.
