How to unmute sound
Do you have a fn button and a speaker button on the keyboard if you do press them together. If not double click on the speaker in the task-bar that will bring up the windows mixer and you can un-mute it there.

Go to the manufacturers website. You will need to look for the correct model number. The only sure way to know the HDD model is to look at the drive itself. And the only sure way to know the exact original spec is to ask the manufacturer and supply them with the serial number.

Battery won t charge
Turn off the laptop. Remove the battery. Leave the AC adapter attached. Power on the laptop to see if it runs on AC power alone. If not, then the problem may lie with the ThinkPad or the AC adapter.

I would start in safe mode with networking. Download and install freeware MALWAREBYTES:
http://www.filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_malware/ In the install UNCHECK the TRIAL PRO version, you want the freeware version. Run a FULL Scan, delete ALL results, reboot. Repeat if necessary. Before you reboot, run a FULL Scan with your up-to-date Anti Virus software, delete ALL results, reboot. Use freeware CCLEANER :
http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/ This freeware program will clean up your machine. In the TOOLS section, STARTUP section, disable ALL unnecessary startup programs to speedup start and running. This will get you started, Post results for further assistance.

Lenovo sl 400 disk read error
First - re-seat the hard disk and reboot the computer. If the computer does not boot up then reboot and go into the BIOS configuration to see if the BIOS detects the hard drive. If it doesn't detect the hard drive then it could be faulty.
Then the hard drive needs to be replaced in the computer/laptop, Windows installed and the computer or laptop's device drivers plus your programs etc. to get a functioning computer/laptop again.
