for sure the cause is someone, erased your hdd,
new hdd or used MS microsoft install disks on this PC
that bad act kills dead all HP drivers, HP made it not MS.
what is the cure, well asking at HP tops my list.
ever heard of HP, fixya is not HP.
missing out? please elaborate that please.

here is the real hp page, not fake, not spam , not scalpers.
or posers.
the top custom switch panel on HP are only used on HP puters.
so only the HP drivers work with those. if missing are now dead.
on mine the wifi button dead and volume up down dead ,etc.
the manuals are there to read and learn all buttons. sure is.

you need to load all the Matching HP drivers.
XP is dead OS now, and a virus magnet,
all that is HP drivers for HP hardware,
if the HP drivers are missing all that fails and more.
if the DVD drive works, forget the MS generalities...(names)
works right matters 100%
the first chip that need to work right is the Intel south bridge.
if its driver is missing USB2 fails. as will blutooth and finger reader
the reader only works with the HP security app loaded
and if was loaded shows up in the task bar, if not its wrong app.
only the correct HP apps work here, and drivers.

here is your support page at HP.
get them will still there, after 10 years they all go byebye.

get 32bit or 64bit right too, that too must match.
xp32, xp64

all the above, are options, you stated
the device must be there and the cable inside connected to it
and the south bridge must be loaded ,its matching driver

and warning #1
XP is now offically dead.
that means if you are connected to the internet
the MS, driver server pages are now gone,
updates are there but the drivers were deleted.
so that means all drivers must come from HP or there will be none, that is beyond your LOCAL driver cache , present now in C:/windows.
whats in your cache now , no man on earth knows.
but SP3 must be loaded or vast drivers are NOW missing
for sure things like USB. AND dvd DRIVES.

Why mess with XP?>?>>>
no person needs this pain, ever.
it has over 700 exploits.

CPU upgrade is a big NO.
The core I5 is a different socket, and modern laptops use mobile CPU's.
Memory upgrade is ok, you can fit 4GB "Up to 4GB of 667-MHz DDR2 SDRAM, dual channel memory support "

Typically, the DC jack is soldered on the motherboard and can't be replaced. Sometimes they can be, but you would need to know how to solder and get your hands on that piece. The hardest would be finding the part.

It looks like the ribbon feeding the screen back to the base may have come loose or possibly even broken
I would recommend the following
1) Go into safe mode (swith the pc on and keep pressing F8 repeatedly until you have a menu presented to you, from the menu choose safe mode) and try there............if the same occurs then you will need to book it in and get a qualified engineer to look at it becaue it is hardware related
2) if it doesnt happen in safe mode then you will have to get the drivers reinstalled
However from what you are explaining it looks like you may be going down the option 1 route
Please can i ask that you leave feedback and vote if this has been useful

Copy all the cd's data of the cd and onto your computer into a folder "call it what you like" and resart the computer into safe mode by pressing F8 on start up untill you see the boot screen, "safe mode only" after your computer starts then go to your folder and try installing it again. if that doesn't work, call MicroSoft and thay will tell you what files need to be removed to be able to install it
