Tip & How-To about NetGear WGR614 Wireless Router

Find your WPA-PSK or WEP key in HEX and ASCII format from the WZC Service

Goto Nirsoft download the WirelessKeyView you can recover your own key stored in the WZC Service if it is running that is.

McAfee must trust this program for it to work like other Antivirus it sees it as the Artemis PUP

When you type a WPA-PSK key in Windows XP, the characters that you type are automatically converted into a new binary key that contains 32 bytes (64 Hexadecimal digits). This binary key cannot instantly be converted back to the original key that you typed, but you can still use it for connecting the wireless network exactly like the original key. In this case, WirelessKeyView displays this binary key in the Hex key column, but it doesn't display the original key that you typed.

For WEP keys, the key is also displayed in ASCII form. Be aware that this utility can only reveal the network keys stored by Windows operating system. It cannot recover network keys stored by any other third-party software. And will only work if the WZC service is running and contians the registry key.

I have forgotten my password for the router and it doesn't reset. I've tried admin, password and adminttd but none of them works

Not quite clear as to your problem. Are you trying to access the web-based configuration page for the router (for which you need an administrator password)? Or are you trying to make a wireless connection to the Internet via the router (for which you need the wireless security key)?

Those are two separate passwords, and you may be able to retrieve them both. The administrator password would be stored in the computer that was used to configure the router. The security key should be in the computer which configured the router, as well as any computer which made a wireless connection to the router.

You may find it helpful to check the owner's manual. (If you don't have that, you may be able to find a copy online and download - be sure to search for the correct model.)

If you can access the web-based configuration page for your router, you should be able to view (or reset) the wireless security key. (Check the owner's manual for your model.)

If you're not able access the router's configuration page, and the passwords are stored, you should still be able to retrieve them by installing some free software.

The security key for the router should be stored ihe computer that was used to configure the router, as well as any computer which made a wireless connection to the router. You should be able to retrieve the passkey from any of those computers, by installing some additional software.
