You can 'temporarily' bypass the 'Incompatible Cartridge' error (or any other cartridge electrical malfunction error for that matter) by accessing the OJ's service menu...see the Inkjet411.com support youtube video found here:

Incompatible print cartridge - tri color

Here's two possible solutions...you can replace the cartridge as some times they can be prone to electric/electronic problem which renders them useless. You may be able to return the defect cartridge.

Option two is to reset the printer by following these steps:
1)Make sure your cartridges are installed.
2)Unplug the power to the printer and wait about 20 seconds
3)Press and hold the # and 3 keys (while unplugged)
4)Plug the power back in (you should see a reset message on the machine)
5)Release the # and 3 keys and follow the prompts

I am receiving the ?Print cartridge problem-[Tri-Color] refer to device doc. to troubleshoot.? Error message on my Hp j4580. There is no help in doc and nothing I?ve tried (cleaning etc.)works. Should I...

I had the same problem. I called hp and spent an hour running through the troubleshooting things that I'd already done. They ended up sending me a new ink cartridge, and surprisingly, it worked. For some reason, the printer refused to recognize a nearly full ink cartridge. Go figure. It seems to be working for now, but it's a huge waste of ink and money. If you have the patience for it, call hp and see if they will replace your cartridges.

Incompatable print cartridges [tri-color] I have no book, what does it mean?

It means someone sold you the incorrect cartridge. Or perhaps the wrong cartridge was in the right box ( not likely ) Write down your model number and return to the store with the incompatable cartridge with your recipt.

My hp officejet j4580 says incompatible black ink cartridge

I've been in print cartridge hell since I bought a J4580.

I spent an hour on chat with HP customer service and was able to resolve the problem by partially resetting the printer. Here's how:
  • Make sure your print cartridges are installed.
  • Unplug the machine, wait 20 seconds
  • Press and hold the # and 3 keys
  • Plug the machine back in
  • You'll see a reset message on the machine, release the # and 3 keys
  • Follow the prompts to set the language and location
Cross your fingers, hopefully your printer will print now!
