Question about IBM ThinkPad T42 Notebook
With out looking an deeper into the problem, try this:
Pull the battery out of the laptop and unplug it. Now hold the power button in for about 40 seconds. Release the power button and then plug the laptop back in, do not replace the battery yet. Now try to power on the laptop. If this works turn off replace battery and try again. If it fails with the battery in place, it could be an issue with the battery. If it will not turn on with just the power plug in, then check to make sure all your plugs are secure (from the wall to the transformer, from the transformer to the laptop), and look for any lights that indicate the laptop is receiving power. If it is not receiving power then wiggle the cord in the laptop side, if it jiggles about, then you could have a connection issue on the MOBO and would need to have the laptop serviced.
Hope this helps
