Question about Krell KAV400Xi Amplifier

1 Answer

I have a Krell KAV-400xi amplifier that won't turn on. Our town had a planned interruption to it's power supply for maintenance and when power was reconnected my amp failed to turn on. The amp was off (at the device not at the wall socket) before the power outage. Can you suggest what may have happened and what you think might need to be repaired or replaced? Thanks, Leigh.

On the face of it the information appeared helpful however opening the back didn't reveal anything that looked like an obvious fuse near the power inlet socket or anywhere for that matter. The only fuses were speaker fuses and they were fine. So I've had to send it to a repairman who I hope can fix it as I shudder to think what postage might cost from Australia to U.S. and back for this weighty Krell product.

Hi,

Try to plug it in other known working outlet, if still the same symptoms, this is an indication that there's a faulty parts inside the unit. First thing to check is the internal fuse of your unit (I'm assuming here that the unit has no led light at the front panel), if it is already out of warranty, open the top cover and check the continuity of the fuse using the multimeter, if you found it open replaced it with same current(ampere) rating and then power on the unit again... Sometimes fuse fail because of voltage surge to guard other parts...

If you're able to switch between them then your issue is possibly relay, relay driver or microprocessor related; all of which require a service techs attention. hope this helps. Gene

Onsemi ( which is motorola) is a good pic for replacements If youre looking at the 21195 , then there must be a compliment to that as well? 21194 or 21196

Hello, after plugging on Ipod through my preamp hooked through my krell kav 300 integrated amp I heard a super loud noise and lost power. I examined the fuse and it looks fine. What do I do?

Sounds like the volume was way up when the iPod turned on. iPods are DC and cause a sudden thump through the speakers when they power on.
If the fuse is not blown, there may be another fuse you have not seen. Most amps have three to five fuses especially a 150watt/channel like the Krell.

Hi, Will the krell kav 500i work on 220v 50hz supply? Thanks

If it has a voltage selector for 220v, once configured it will work just fine Being electronic instead of mechanical the power frequency won't affect it. If it doesn't have a voltage selctor, don't plug it into 220.

Krell kav300i, increasing volume by itself.

That is an extremely odd problem. I suggest finding a tech in your area who is familiar with the unit, or contacting krell directly.
