Verbatim Store 'N Go 1GB USB drive
This unit no longer lights up, nor is recognised by my or other PC's. Although the msg "New Hardware Recognised" appears, I get "Please insert a disc into drive F (G whatever)" and can't read/write to it.
I have tried cahnging the disc anmes G, H etec, to no avail.
I read somewhere that this unit may have shorted out, so that might mean that it's a total loss. Is there any (verbatim) means of getting the data back?
When the drive is really defect nothing can help.
But there are several programs you can try to find, to recover data from "defective" drives, cards or whatever.
just google "Recover my files" and try one of the free applications to see if there is still something on the USB drive.

Sounds like you broke something ;)
If your computer does not recognize anything when you plug it into the computer, your problem is most likely a broken contact inside the usb drive.
You should attempt to open the drive, and see if one of the four contacts on the inside of hte usb key are no longer making their way to the circuit board, and try to reconnect it.
IF you can push the connectors down with your fingers and make contact temporarily, and the computer recognizes it, try to just hold it there while you copy all your data off. Then throw away the flash drive.

You probably damaged the drive from sudden disconnection of the signal line. I would suggest trying it on one other computer before considering it trashed.

I have the same issue with a 4GB Store N Go, works fine on my Vista PC at home but after copying a 3.5GB file to it and then later trying to copy that file to my XP machine at work, it keeps disconnecting and failing with, "The volume for a file has been externally altered so that the opened file is no longer valid". I really wanted the file off the drive, so what I tried was using "Robocopy.exe" (in restartable mode, waiting 5 seconds between each retry) from the Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Resource Kit. Once you have a copy of this, you need to open a Command Prompt, change into a directory (CD\<foldername>) where you want to copy the file to, then swap to the USB drive and use the following command;
Robocopy Drive1 Drive2 /Z /W:5
E.g.: If the USB drive is D: and your hard drive is C: with a folder on it called "Backup" (where you want to copy the files to).. do the following;
Start - Run: CMD <Enter>
MD Backup <Enter> (If the folder doesn't already exist)
CD Backup <Enter>
(Note: Assumes robocopy.exe is in your PATH or the same folder)Robocopy D: C: /Z /W:5
This will probably take quite some time, depending on the number of files/size... but it did work for me (eventually).

usualy it means that it has an error,try checking that the cables to the drive are connected properly if there all fine try shutting the usb drive off and turing it back on after 3 min.
you should turn your PC off also and restart it.
if that does not work you need to post more information about your PC and periferal devices.
